Cold-Water Rescue Diving (or C'mon! It'll Be Fun!)

Cold water is scary. Really cold water with ice on top is extra scary. Once you’ve fallen through the ice, and the water has you in its grip, it quickly robs you of your ability to fight. In a few short minutes, it makes you clumsy and slow and sleepy and disorientated, until you can’t even try to save yourself. It’s a predator that makes you calmly accept your death. For as long as I could remember, one of my top fears—a break-out-in-a-cold-sweat-even-thinking-about-it fears—was getting trapped under the ice. The idea of pounding on an unbreakable frozen layer while not being able to breathe… That’s the stuff of nightmares. So why, exactly, was I standing on a frozen reservoir, just feet from a hole cut in the ice, preparing to jump into thirty-two-and-a-half-degree water? Sadly, I have a tendency to believe people when they say, “C’mon! This’ll be fun!” I’ve gotten suckered into countless chores (“Let’s all spring-clean the boarding stable. It’ll be fun! It won’t ...

Not the gentle clearing of a throat, or the embellished affectation Madame Renarde had employed when trying to make a point, but a deep, racking explosion that echoed through the cave walls. “Are you quite all right, Madame Renarde?” he inquired softly. The ladies’ companion lit the lantern beside her bunk and blew her nose with a honk. “It’s the damp,” she explained. “I’ve never been able to abide it long.” Rhys ...

Free Historical Romance Novella!

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope 2016 is off to a good start for you. I'm looking forward to a year of lots of reading and lots of writing. If you're planning a bookish year too, Sourcebooks has a present for you. For the month of January, my Romance of the Turf prequel novella,  The Sport of Baronets ,  will be FREE.  What's it about? A feud between two influential families. Horse theft. Secrets. Gambling. Racing. And above all, romance--an enemies-to-lovers plot that brings everything else together.  I call this a prequel, but it's a stand-alone story with its own HEA. The Romance of the Turf trilogy tells the stories of the Chandler siblings, a talented but troubled quartet at the heart of the Regency horse-racing world. The Sport of Baronets  is the story of youngest sister Hannah and the neighboring baronet, Sir Bartlett Crosby, with whom her family has long been feuding. As you might expect, that all starts to change... I hope you'll give...

Everyone's a Winner When Fall is in the Air!

from Mia Marlowe... I'm so tired of summer. It's been hot and sticky and busy. I'm ready for crisp days and shivery nights. I want to see the winter constellations begin to peek over the horizon. I'm ready to break out my sweaters and woolly socks. Something about autumn just calls for a stack of books and cocooning and evenings spent before a crackling fire. Of course, it also means that winter is coming, but I'll put up with that for the glory of fall.   Of course, autumn promises to be as busy as summer as far as writing goes. I have new books coming out in both October and November. On October 7th, Once Upon a Plaid hits the bookstore shelves. It's the story of William and Kat, two people who love each other dearly, but what is a couple to do in 16th century Scotland when a laird needs an heir and his beloved wife is barren? Many tears fell on the keyboard while I was writing this Christmas story. I'm thrilled to share that Publishers Weekly gave i...

Holiday time & free novella!

At the moment I’m in New Zealand. It’s probably really cold…actually I know it will be really cold as I’m going to spend a few days skiing which I’ve never done before. I think you’ve guessed that I pre-wrote this blog and scheduled it before I went on holiday, I promise there will be pics next month.  In the lead up to going on holiday I made a detailed schedule of all the things I needed to get done before we went away. I had Annwyn #4 1st draft to finish the next ES Siren to polish and the next In A Bottle story to get to my editor. I did have several other jobs pencilled in but it quickly became apparent they weren’t going to happen. I don’t write on holiday, but I do plot. So I packed an idea for the last In a Bottle story (there are only so many ways to free a genie…you can check out 2 in Boyfriend in a Bottle and Temptation in a Bottle ) The other thing I had to do was get new puzzle/coloring in books and reading books for the kids. Youngest is a fussy reader, but ...

Silence of the Wolf--Blog Tour

Tom's story is here! Are you the baby of the family? A middle child who's just in the middle? The firstborn and in charge? Even if the age differences are only by a few minutes? Tom is the youngest of the triplet Silver brothers and fans have been waiting for his story forever. The question was raised in the first two books, Heart of the Wolf and Destiny of the Wolf, as to which came first: red wolves or gray wolves. And so, I did some research to answer this question. I think that's one of the most fun things I get to do when I'm writing a book--research. It's also fun for me to write about characters based on birth order. In the Heart of the Highland Wolf series, Duncan MacNeill is the baby, so he makes up for this by being a rough and gruff warrior. When he's on a mission, that's all he thinks about. In A Howl for a Highland Wolf, no way does he think a pretty she-wolf, sassy enough to wear a lot of silver, and single, is going to sidetrack him. ...
