Linda Broday: Fall's Coming!

The months have really whizzed by and fall is almost here. That means county fairs. I can't wait. There is nothing better than fair food--the fried Oreos, Twinkies and fried cheese, the hamburgers and fries, the pizza. Yummy. Which brings me to my subject of the fried pie. Pies have been around since Medieval times when they needed something to seal in the juices of cooked meat or fruit. Someone (whoever it was earned my undying gratitude) developed dough and it was perfect. But in the 1800s, these upstart, practical Americans came up with something truly ingenious--the FRIED PIE. No one really knows where they originated but a good many believe they came from the mountains of the Carolinas, Kentucky, and Virginia. Early on, they were called "hand pies" or "crab lanterns." Whatever they were called, these were enthusiastically received. They were portable, no mess and you held them in your hand. Didn't need a fork or plate. ...

To Catch a Texas Star Is Here!

To Catch a Texas Star hit bookshelves and online vendors last week and I’m so excited to have it in readers’ hands at last. This story is different from any I’ve written. This is the first time I’ve created a character who’s an author and I kind of liked that. An Overview of the Story: Marley McClain is heading into town one morning and spies a man lying just off the road. She sees that he’s in bad shape so she gets him into the back of her wagon and takes him to her family ranch—the Aces ‘n Eights. Roan Penny lies unconscious for two days then as he slowly recovers, he finds an attraction between him and Marley growing. But first, he has to make the men pay who killed his friend and dragged him almost to his death. Marley knows that he’s a drifter and doesn’t intend to stick around but her heart tells her she’ll have trouble living without him. Roan is everything she’d looked for but never dreamed of finding. A frightening stranger appears along with foreboding. Then a long-he...

A Beach Vacation!

For the last four years I've worked solid, only taking trips to writer's conferences or autographings. Never for my own enjoyment. But....next month I'm going to the beach! My sister and I have rented a beach house for a whole week. I'm pinching myself, wondering if this is real. Yep, it is. It's located on Bolivar Island in the Gulf of Mexico. You have to take a ferry from Galveston, TX to get to it. The pirate Jean LaFitte used to have a home on the island and for a time used it for a base of operations. Maybe I'll look for buried treasure! There also used to be a fort here in the early 1800s called Fort Las Casas. The "Mother of Texas" Jane Long wintered in the abandoned fort with her toddler, a maid, and her dog. Jane gave birth to a second child. Their food was running out and she only had a rusty cannon for defense. To make the Indians think the fort was still inhabited, she fired the cannon each morning and raised a red petticoat up...

Linda Broday: Epitaphs and Tombstones

Some people might think I’m morbid, but I’ve always loved cemeteries. I love walking through them, reading the tombstones, imagining the person’s story. Did they achieve their hopes and dreams? Did they know love? Were they loved in return? How did they die? So many questions go through my mind. In my newest book THE COWBOY WHO CAME CALLING that released last month, I had a scene where the H/H are discussing what they want on their tombstones. Glory is losing her eyesight and very distraught about the fact. Luke’s trying to lighten her spirits by telling her everything he wants his epitaph to say. Here’s the short scene: “Do you ever give any thought what you’d want as an epitaph, Glory?”   Saying the name that occupied Luke’s waking moments more and more, gave him pleasure. “Hell’s bells, what a morbid subject.” “I take that as a no.”   He settled his shoulder against hers, enjoying the intimate touch.   “Don’t tell me you haven’t at least considered...

Book Launch: The Cowboy Who Came Calling!

Sometimes events in my life inspire a story. That was certainly true with Knight on the Texas Plains and my little playmate who’d been won in a poker game. And now again with THE COWBOY WHO CAME CALLING (Book #2 Texas Heroes series.) When I wrote this story in 2002, I was locked in a battle to keep my eyesight. I’d been diagnosed with MS and the disease was determined to steal my vision no matter what doctors did. Each day found a drop in the things I could see. Then, I woke one morning unable to see anything but shapes and shadows. My neurologist put me in the hospital, gave me bags of steroids, and was able to bring much of it back. Although I still struggle with eyesight, I can do almost everything I want today. In The Cowboy Who Came Calling, Glory Day is slowly going blind and this terrifies her. She’s the sole support of her younger sisters and her mother. If she doesn’t hunt, they don’t eat. To make matters worse, the bank is trying to take their farm. On the trai...

A Little Christmas Cheer and a Cover Reveal!

Oh my goodness! I feel like I’ve been stuck on some amusement park ride all year. You know. The one that yanks you high in the air then drops you like a sack of potatoes and sometimes does a lot of wild loops. But I did it. I released five books and I’m pretty proud of that.  But now, I'm feeling a bit old and worn out.  So, Christmas is almost upon us with just a few more days left. I don’t do a lot of decorating. My tree is in the attic and that’s where it’ll stay. (I’m referencing the old and worn out part here.)  For the last 30 years no matter what, I’ve always put my Christmas angel out. She’s getting a bit frazzled (like me) but still looks beautiful. I also decorate my dining table. This year, it’s candles and poinsettia. I lit the candles the other night when I ate and took a picture. It brightened up my spirits and put a warm glow in my heart. I thought my French doors leading to my patio needed some cheer too. No one will see ...

NEW RELEASE: TO MARRY A TEXAS OUTLAW

IN TEXAS, SOME LEGENDS ARE BORN, SOME ARE MADE, AND SOME ARE CREATED BY DESTINY......... I’m so happy, happy to FINALLY share TO MARRY A TEXAS OUTLAW with you! It seems this third book, the story you’ve all waited so patiently for, would never come. (A watched pot never boils.) I think you’ll find it well worth the wait. At last, Luke Weston has the location for the man who pinned a federal judges’ murder on him. He’s searched for Ned Sweeney for two long years and finally has his location. He only has a one-hour window before Sweeney goes underground again. He’s riding to Dead Horse Creek when he sees a woman bound and gagged underneath a scrawny tree and covered in blood. He’s torn about what to do but his honor won’t let him ride on. The woman has amnesia--doesn’t know her name, where she belongs, or how she got there. But she’s mad enough to whip someone. Deliverance Canyon is close by. He decides to leave her with Tally Shannon and the other woman hiding out t...

The Christmas Stranger

Time is flying and it won’t be long before Santa will ride in on his sleigh. Temps are supposed to drop to 35 tonight here in the Texas Panhandle. Snow will fly soon and I can't wait. I'm praying for a white Christmas this year. CHRISTMAS IN A COWBOY'S ARMS released on October 3rd and I'm so excited to have this out! I felt truly honored to have a story in a book with Leigh Greenwood, Rosanne Bittner,  Margaret Brownley, Anna Schmidt, and Amy Sandas. Simply an amazing list of bestselling authors.  And I'm part of it! Doin' the happy dance here! These six stories are guaranteed to warm your heart and may whisk you back home. In my story – The Christmas Stranger – drifter, Hank Destry, who has no home or family is struggling to find his way through a blinding blizzard, wearing only a thin coat. He has to find shelter soon or he and his animals will perish. The drifts become too high to continue. Unable to hold on to the reins, he slides fr...
