Hi everyone! I've been a little incognito for the past couple of months. I've barely tweeted, ventured onto Facebook, or even participated in forums like I normally do. The reason for this? Personal, important, and something that not a lot of people talk openly about. My husband and I are going through an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. It's amazing to me how little people know about it. The first thing people usually think of is Octomom, or test tube babies. But the reality of the process is fascinating, terrifying, and completely amazing. Have you ever met someone who said they were an "aspiring author"? Well, duh, who hasn't? It's a pretty common dream to have, after all. Books are awesome, and everyone thinks it would be incredibly cool to write one of their own. But not many people actually achieve that dream, do they? Before I was published, when all I did was glom every available book all day long, writing a book seemed like an impossible task. It was Mount Everest, and I was a pudgy teenager with acne and zero clue how to strap on a pair of hiking boots. I appreciated the effort of every person who scaled that peak, after all, they brought stories back with them. So, it's my birthday week. Technically, my birthday was on Monday, the 14th, but this has turned into a week-long celebration, and I'm totally fine with that. :) I turned 31 this year. So far, it sucks a lot less than turning 30 did. A lot of my friends claim that they feel more comfortable and happy with themselves and their lives in their 30s, but personally, my 30th birthday threw me into a big ol' pit of depression. I think it was just the realization that in 30 years on this earth I hadn't accomplished anything I thought I needed to. I don't have kids, I don't have a college degree, and my day job is still the one I was working during summers in high school. I felt like a failure for a long time during my 30th year. But, now at 31, I've realized some things. Despite not finishing college, I'm becoming a successful author. Within the next two years, I should be able to safely transition to writing full-time. We have two dogs. Oliver, our toy poodle, was neutered at around eight months old. The other, our beautiful whippet girl named Eden (Edie for short), wasn't spayed for a long time. We toyed with the idea of showing her (we've never done this before) but eventually we decided against the idea. She's now three and a half years old. Dealing with her heat cycles was a bit of a pain, of course. But I was worried about surgery, so we'd put it off. Finally, though, we decided to bite the bullet and took her in to get spayed last Friday. I was quite happy "broke", thanks guys. Today I'm going to talk a little bit about my process of writing. I've been writing fiction seriously since 2009, and the way I go about things now is totally different than how I got started. In the beginning, I didn't plot SQUAT. I sat down in front of the computer and the muse breath took me away. It was fun, letting my creativity loose and seeing where the story took me. When I sat down to write, I had no idea what kind of story would fly out of my fingers. It was an adventure. But then I finished something and decided I wanted to publish it. And therein lay the problem. My muse breath didn't care about structure. The story I'd made wasn't satisfying because I didn't understand the way the story was put together. Some people instinctively structure their stories well. They can pants their way through any book, no matter the length, and be totally fine with it. Those people are so not me.
