Cures for the V-Day Hangover

If you're reading this, several things may have happened to you last night. 1. You may have had a romantic evening with your significant other, which ended up with a bottle of wine and a pair of fluffy handcuffs. 2. You may have spend the night on the town with your single friends, partying it up like the wild young things you are. 3. You may have spent the night alone crying into a family-sized bag of Cheetos and watching "An Officer And A Gentleman" for the seventeenth time. From Wikimedia Commons If any of these things happened to you, you may have what I like to call the Valentine's Day Hangover. You know the feeling. That crash at the end of a conversation-heart sugar buzz, that irritation of spending a hundred bucks on a teddy that lasted about thirty seconds, the soul-crushing loneliness of realizing your relationship with a book boyfriend is totally one-sided. Yeah. I get all these things. So here's a fantastic cure for what ails you. The hair ...

The Brain Test

Ever wonder which side of your brain is more dominant? The theory is that if you're "left-brained" you're more logical, analytical, and objective. If you're "right-brained" you're said to be more intuitive, thoughtful, and subjective. So which side is most dominant for you? Or are you 50-50? Take the brain test

Wedding Scenes!

by Danielle Jackson (soon to be Dresser) As you are reading this post, I will actually be basking in the sun on my HONEYMOON! In light of my recent wedding, and for an end of the week pick me up, I thought I'd share some of my favorite wedding scenes from movies: Sense and Sensiblity has always been my favorite of Austen's books, and this movie version by Ang Lee is also my favorite adaptation. The wedding scene at the end is very quick, but I love how each couple's personalities come across: So, this one isn't technically a wedding, but wouldn't you love to be serenaded by Fred Astaire, near a beautiful church, wearing lovely clothes, like Audrey Hepburn's character in Funny Face ? One of my all time favorite movies overall, but I always loved this scene: This next scene, from Love Actually, is actually kind of sad, but I really love how gorgeous Keira Knightley looks in the film--how every bride wants to look! And both actors in this scene do a wo...

The Day After...

RWA Conference in Atlanta! Now it's over and we're all on our way home or we've already landed and staring at a blank screen. For me, it means I'm driving home, in a nice quiet car reliving the memories and looking forward to next year in San Antonio! Here are some fabulous authors arriving at the hotel!   Cheryl stole my thunder on Saturday with her wonderful post and pictures. But hey, one can never have too many memories of four wonderful days spent in the company of awesome authors. I'll will say they wouldn't let me and Cheryl sit together at the Sourcebooks dinner and now I'm banned from sitting beside Jade Lee. In a few years they will put a chair outside the door with a lap tray for me! But they did let us sit together at conference. There is a non-disclosure thing that we have to sign in blood saying we will not reveal what we were talking about! The wonderful Cathy Genna from New Jersey was awarded Bookseller of the Year and meeting her...

Happy National Blow Stuff Up Day.... I mean, 4th of July!

The 4th of July is one of the times I am especially happy to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the United States, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. It is a gorgeous city on the lake and home to one of the biggest fireworks displays in the country. We're also near a few Indian reservations, so we can get better fireworks of our own. After all the ones they sell at the stands are not like they used to be. Remember when snakes got really enormous? Remember when sparklers lasted longer than 30 seconds? Remember when the flowers chased after you like they contained homing devices? Ah, nostalgia. Anyway, since I live downtown, I have the benefit of being able to see the show from my house. Before that the whole neighborhood gets together for a huge BBQ. We consume pounds of watermelon, ribs, dill cream pasta salad, and potato chips. We set off our own fireworks as the sky grows dark until we see this: So, Happy 4th of July to all in the US and happy belated Canada ...

A Bit on Blogging

Hello Everyone! The September authors are wrapping up their extensive blog tours, the October authors getting ready for theirs, and I just sent the November authors their tours. Sufficed to say, our authors are saturating the book blogging community! And that’s a good thing! As I’ve mentioned to all of you before, guest blogging has become the newest and easiest way to connect with readers. Yes, it’s a lot of work and yes, it’s hard to come up with topics and yes, it can be totally annoying—but I’ve had many a conversation with industry professionals (including booksellers) who think it’s really great and proactive that our authors are out there talking about their books. So, I’ve put together some tips and info that I think everyone will benefit from! 1) Give Good Blog : Keep your blogs at a conversational length—I think a good length to aim for is 750-800 words, but in general blogs are around 500-1000 words. Anything less than 500 looks like you’re lazy and anything more than 1000 ...
