Five of My Favorite (Not So Typical) Heroic Traits

Five of My Favorite (Not So Typical) Heroic Traits: 5.     He doesn’t always have to be the hero. I love when the hero’s there to help when he’s needed, but he also knows when to step back and trust that his love can handle the situation. It’s great getting rescued and all, but sometimes it’s more fun to be the one to rescue him . 4.     He’s shy. Confidence is hot, sure, but I have a soft spot for a rough and tough guy who gets a bit tongue-tied in the presence of his crush, especially if… 3.     He’s also secretly hilarious. If he makes me laugh, he’ll steal my heart. 2.     He’s really good at horseback riding. Whether he’s a cowboy or a Mountie, there’s just something about a man who knows what he’s doing on a horse. The tight pants don’t hurt, either. 1.     He loves animals. I mean, puppies and hot guys? Yes. Grumpy cats and hot guys? Yes. Rescued baby goats and hot guys? Yes. The combina...

Top Five Myths About the Glamorous Life of an Author

Five Myths About the Glamorous Life of an Author: 5.    That it’s glamorous  at all . There are waaaay too many pairs of sweatpants involved for my life to be considered glamorous. 4.    That I lounge around, waiting for the muse to strike. Yeah…if I did that, I wouldn’t have completed even a full chapter. As with most jobs, the bulk of writing is drudgery. It’s a drudgery that I love and wouldn’t give up for any other job, but still…drudgery. 3.    That after I write the first draft of a book, my editor moves a few commas around, and then it’s ready for publication. Nope. My books change a LOT during edits. I’d say a third gets completely rewritten. If rough drafts were houses, mine wouldn’t be move-in ready. They’d be fixer-uppers (the super-scary, get-out-before-something-falls-on-us kind of fixer-uppers). 2.    That I control covers, blurbs, titles, pricing, sales, and other promo stuff. My marvelo...

Top Five Reasons Why Romance Books Are the Very Best

Top Five Reasons Why Romance Books Are the Very Best: 5.    The Delicious Heroes. Whether grouchy or funny, tough or sweet, romance heroes are the swooniest. Since my heroes tend to lean toward the grumpy side, chatty Hugh—the hero of the second book in my Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series—was a change for me. It made writing On the Chase so much fun, though, and it was probably good for me to get away from the brooding guys for a little while (although I’m sure I’ll be back—I do love a grump with squishy-soft insides). 4.    The Awesome Heroines. They may have their foibles and quirks, but the women in romance books battle through their insecurities and weaknesses to get things done! I love discovering the unexpected bad-assery in my heroines. It reminds me that we all have superhero strength inside of us, just waiting to emerge when we need to save the day. 3.    The Humor. I’m such a sucker for a good joke. When characters mak...

The Island of Misfit Dogs

The Island of Misfit Dogs While researching my Rocky Mountain K9 Unit series, I was impressed with the talented, real-life K9s working alongside law enforcement officers. It’s amazing what these brave dogs can do. Photo courtesy of the Rochester Minnesota Police K9 Unit Here on the Island of Misfit Dogs (i.e. my house), things are…well, a bit different. Roadie and Wiley are Australian Shepherds. Thinking that they should be allowed to do what their breed was meant to do, I signed up for herding lessons. I quickly discovered that they were not interested in herding sheep. Or goats. Or anything, really. These lessons ended when Roadie, the poster child for canine ADHD, turned away from the sheep to follow a butterfly. Not even a squirrel. A butterfly . Sigh. Cam, on the other hand, is a Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepherd cross. Her ancestors were livestock guardians, bred to hang out with the flock or herd and protect the livestock from predat...
