Sources of Inspiration

Since my debut, Beautiful Crazy, is out next week and I’m currently finishing up book 3 (Beautiful Wreck) in the Rock ’n’ Ink series, I thought it might be fun to share some thoughts on inspiration. Authors, and creative types in general, glean creative kindling from a myriad of different sources. Some authors have dreams that play out as full scenes, others journal, and many use art to light the fire of inspiration. Usually I draw my ideas from the Internet (Yay for Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr), but a lot of inspiration comes from facets of my own life.

Music:

If you know anything about me at all, you probably know I’m a huge music lover. I listen to everything from electroswing to Jack White to heavy metal to rockabilly. Music plays a big part in my new series, Rock 'n' Ink, as it centers around a heavy metal band on the rise. But my tastes are much broader and a lot more eclectic than just one genre. For a sample of some of my favorites, check out my playlists for Beautiful Crazy:

Hockey:

I’m not really a sporty kind of girl. I played soccer, did a short stint on the swim team in high school before I discovered music and bad boys, and watch the Olympics with my family, but most sports don't hold my interest for long.

Except one: HOCKEY! I love hockey and I especially love my San Jose Sharks. There’s something about the grace and elegance mixed with the sheer brutality and athleticism that calls to me. Not to mention the players…holy hell, you guys, hockey players are hot!

Check out some of my hockey inspiration on my Pinterest board.

Hallmark movies:

I tend to write a little bit naughty so this might seem odd coming from me, but I adore Hallmark movies. I mean, I LOVE them. They’re my reward for adulting well or meeting my word count. They’re my current drug of choice. Hallmark movies are excellent reminders of how consistent story structure can keep viewers/readers interested despite knowing the outcome will give the characters their HEA.

My life:

Duh, right? It's so obvious, but I really do find that paying attention to the world around me provides the riches soil for story ideas. My relationships with the people I know and love, as well as the stories I weave around people I see just walking down the street tend to offer the most inspiration.

I’d love to know where you find your creative inspiration.

My debut, Beautiful Crazy, releases next Tuesday! I'm so excited to share Kevan and Mason with the world!

"You confound me. You're all these maddening contradictions that don't make any sense... And I can't get enough of your special brand of beautiful crazy."
She's a rocker with attitude and ink...
He's a sexy suit who gets what he wants.

Kevan Landry is trying to keep her life on track and her brother in rehab. If her fledgling marketing firm can sign the hot new band, Manix Curse, it will make a world of difference. Mason Dillon heads the most successful music PR firm in Portland. He's desperate to breathe new life into the company by signing Manix Curse.
The last thing either one needs is a one-night stand with a smoldering stranger...

The stakes are high when a battle for the band-in the bedroom and the boardroom-becomes a battle of the heart. But if these two can set aside their differences, they may find they're the right mix of sexy savvy to conquer both their worlds.

    1. Ha! Thanks! I just love him...I have since I was a teenager. If you haven't seen him in concert, I highly recommend it. He's quite a showman.
