It’s Movie Time by Shana Galen

The holidays are the part of the year I get to spend with family. They are also the part of the year where I have free babysitting (read: family) and can go see a movie not rated G. Last year I saw Les Miserables. Only one movie, but it was a good one and really the length of two movies. This year I hope to add a few more to my holiday schedule.

I don’t need a babysitter to see the new Disney film Frozen. I already know the story thanks to Disney’s way early marketing campaign. My daughter has had the audio picture book for about two months. The good news is that the story sounds really good, so I’m excited to see it.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire opened Friday. I loved the first one, and I really want to see the second. I have it on my must-see list. The previews look great. Anyone seen it yet?

Another sure blockbuster is The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. I have to confess something: I haven’t seen the first movies in the series, and I haven’t read the books. I’m sure once Comicpalooza gets wind of this, they won’t invite me back, but there it is. I have until December 13 to catch up to the rest of you.

Two other movies I’ll see if I have time, and rent if I don’t, ate Saving Mr. Banks about how the Disney movie Mary Poppins made it to the screen and The Secret Life of Walter Middy. Both open in late December. I always loved Thurber’s short story about Walter Mitty. I’d love to see it on screen.

Are there any films you’re looking forward to? I haven’t even mentioned Walking with Dinosaurs or Anchorman 2 (that omission was not by accident).

  1. We're planning to see Catching Fire over Thanksgiving while #1 Daughter is visiting us.

I haven't decided whether to go to the 2nd Hobbit movie. The problem is that Tolkien's little gem of a book it would have made one terrific movie. Hollywood greed has turned it into 3 and stuffed it with so much backstory it trudges along. However, the chance to visit Middle Earth is so compelling, I still may hold my nose and go.

  3. The only movie I'm planning to see this season is The Hobbit, and yes, I've read the books (several times)and seen the movies. I will have to agree with Mia about The Hobbit, though. The first installment did plod a bit. Hoping they pick up the pace in the second and third!

  6. I must really be turning into a scrooge or something because the only one of those movies that looks the least bit interesting to me is The Hobbit one and like you, I haven't seen the earlier ones in the series.

  7. I'd like to see both Catching Fire and the second Hobbit movie. Ooh, and Gravity--and I'm sure there are others coming up. The holiday season is full of great releases.

Notice how I said "I'd like to." These are pipe dreams, because we don't get a sitter that often. I think the last movie I saw in a theater was "Lincoln." But I'll see these eventually, when they're out on DVD.

  14. I'll just be glad when Justified comes back on...Raylan is my muse for my cowboys! Movies in the theater...not so much. There's no pause button so I'll wait until the DVD comes out.

  15. Sorry I missed this yesterday, great post, Shana! I am really looking forward to seeing Frozen, too. I grew up watching the Mouseketeers during the week and then Wonderful World of Disney on Sunday evenings. We'd watch Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom first then Disney ;)
