As I counted down to January this year, I knew I had to make a lot of changes in my life—both personally and professionally. But as New Years Eve approached, I couldn’t find my usual enthusiasm for sitting quietly beside the Christmas tree and scribbling my bright, shiny new goals in a notepad with a fine-point Sharpie. This year I just felt overwhelmed with “all the things”, yet unmotivated to do them. I hope 2019 is going great for you so far. Have you ever wondered why we start the year in January? Instead of, say, around the spring equinox when plants start to come back to life. That’s the time they used in Mesopotamia and ancient Rome. Well, around 153 BC, the Romans started inaugurating their consuls in the new month of Januarius. Since they dated years by consulships, this began to seem like the New Year. There was a bit of back and forth on this, but in 1582 when the pope adjusted the errors in the Julian calendar by adopting the Gregorian calendar (don’t ask), January 1 officially became New Year's Day for most Catholic countries. This was gradually adopted among Protestant countries. The British, for example, didn’t cave until 1752. Until then, England  – and its American colonies  – still celebrated the new year on March 25. I kind of like that idea.

This year, I'm taking the season one day at a time, trying not to stress or bitch or moan. Just keep plowing on through it. Raise your hands if you can relate. I got the tree up on the 9th, and wrapped presents on the 14th. At least, those I had already bought. Christmas presents for my eldest son are kinda tough this year because he now lives clear across the country in California and doesn't want to have to take stuff home with him on the plane. Getting packages delivered to him at his workplace instead of his apartment wasn't the solution, because they tried to deliver one of them on a Saturday when no one was there. *sigh* But I keep trying... Making candy is next. I'm trying my hand at chocolate truffles this year. Wish y’all had been with me at the revived Dallas Fantasy Fair just after Thanksgiving this year. I signed books, chatted with old friends like artist David Spurlock, made new friends, and discovered DJ Larry King’s straight-up pickle juice might be a food group all on its lonesome. What’s so special about the DFF is that it combines comic book collectors, comic artists and writers, fine artists, book authors, cosplay awards, and a fortune teller, along with my favorite—carnivorous plants.
