Thanksgiving is only one week away, and this time of year always makes me remember all the reasons why I am grateful. I have a few new reasons this year. I am lucky enough to have fallen in love in real life with a lovely man named Eric who makes me laugh. He brings me a lot of joy, and I am very grateful for that. I am grateful for my new day job which keeps me crazy busy but which also challenges me and has introduced me to wonderful, interesting people both in the office and out in the world. I enjoy the variety of amazing people who are in my work life. I am grateful as always for my family and friends, without whom life would be tedious dull. So thank you Mama and Daddy, Barry, Vena and Ron, Amy and Troy, Johanna and Renee and Cassie, Marianne and Chris, Blessings on you all this holiday season. I love writing books, but eventually every book has to end. Guess what my emotions are as I head toward the final chapter. (And yes, I do actually talk to my characters out loud like this.) Answer: All of the above – Almost every stage of writing has conflicting emotions, but as I head to the final chapter, everything gets heightened. Hopefully the reader’s does too! One inescapable sign of autumn is the appearance of pumpkin-flavored everything on the market shelves. My Sourcebooks editor passed on my current work in progress, although she says she still wants to publish me again. All I need to do is write another Cat Star book. I'll probably do that eventually, and although fans of the series might be pleased, people change. Authors change. Unfortunately, many readers don't want their favorite authors to take a new direction. For that reason (and others), authors keep churning out the same type of books. Eventually, writing becomes a chore, and they end up spitting out the same story with different characters. Maybe not even different characters. Maybe only the names have been changed.
