Let's Go Shopping!

Recently my husband made me go furniture shopping. That's right. he made me. We've needed a new dining room table and chairs for about 8 years and a new mattress for the last 2. But I hate furniture shopping! Not my table. Finally, my husband lined up a Saturday where we didn't have plans, sent my daughter to her grandma's house, and dragged me to the furniture store. I won't say I enjoyed it, but I'm sitting at my new beautiful dining room table right now, and last night I slept very well on our new mattress. If there was thing in your house you could replace this weekend, what would it be? Furniture? A sink? A TV? Nothing at all?

BAD BOYS AHEAD

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR 'THE ORIGINALS' AHOY You have been warned.  I'm one of those people who rarely watches TV. It became a bit of a choice between having time to write, or watching random shows on the box just for the heck of it, and well, the writing won. However, I do love buying boxed sets of my favourite shows, and going on a full season binge whenever they release. I like being able to watch the series all at once (or within a week), because you can really see the characters arc's growing over the span of the show. Also, because when I start, I want to watch MOAR! NOW! My recent glom was The Originals, which I've been hungrily anticipating ever since I heard it was happening. The ultimate bad-boy Klaus Mikaelson, and his arc of redemption? His noble brother, Elijah, who sometimes does what needs to be done to protect his family, even as it tortures him? Yes, please. I adore anti-heroes and complex relationships between famil...

Getting Personal - our Little Lamm

Hi everyone! I've been a little incognito for the past couple of months. I've barely tweeted, ventured onto Facebook, or even participated in forums like I normally do. The reason for this? Personal, important, and something that not a lot of people talk openly about. My husband and I are going through an in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle. It's amazing to me how little people know about it. The first thing people usually think of is Octomom, or test tube babies. But the reality of the process is fascinating, terrifying, and completely amazing. Day 5 blastocyst - From Wikimedia Commons My husband and I have been going through infertility diagnostics and treatments off and on for ten years. It's been very, very difficult. And part of the reason it's so difficult? It makes you feel ashamed of your own body.  I'm open about our infertility treatments because it's my way of tearing down the wall of quiet shame that infertility forces on us. I want pe...

The Novel Experience in Las Vegas!

I am excited to announce that I'll be attending   The Novel Experience Convention  and book signing in Las Vegas in April! Aside from writing, READERS are my major priority this year. This convention will be the perfect opportunity for me to meet and interact with bloggers and fellow bookworms. There will be parties and dinners and a lot of opportunities to just hang out. I'm planning on bringing some fun swag and I'm going to take somebody out to Bubba Gump Shrimp because I don't want to eat alone. I will also be joining a group of historical authors to treat readers to wine and appetizers Friday evening. There will also be authors hosting dinners, taking readers on Vegas tours and checking out some awesome shows. I hear there's even going to be a pub crawl!  The signing is free and open to the public. It will be my first time signing at an event and I'm nervous and excited. I have some really cool goodies planned for my table, and of course I will have ...

It’s Not How You Start, It’s How You Finish

Just before Thanksgiving, I wrote the two words that every author loves--“The End,” marking the completion of my latest Victorian romance. The first in a projected series, taking place in a different year and a different setting, and featuring a cast of new characters whose dynamics are complicated and contentious even on a good day. As you can guess, it’s been quite a ride, bringing these people to life and giving the lead couple the happy ending they (mostly) deserve! Over the years, I’ve learned that every book I write has something to teach me. The first one, which remains close to my heart, showed me that I could see a project of that scope through to the end. Waltz with a Stranger taught me about perseverance, about getting back in the game even in the face of distractions and disappointments. A Song at Twilight taught me about taking risks and trying new approaches in storytelling--because how else does one grow as a writer? This last one? Taught me about focus ....

The Mysterious Standing Stones by Victoria Roberts

Tales of standing stones and stone circles have been told since the beginning of time. In Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, the fictional Craig na Dun stone circle comes to life when Claire takes a magical voyage back through time to 18th century Scotland. I didn’t think that I needed to mention “into the arms of Jamie Fraser.”  But who really knows what secrets these mysterious stones hold? These magnificent sights can be found all over Scotland in places such as Aberdeenshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Orkney, the Western Isles, and the Scottish borders.     One of the most famous stone circles is the 5,000 year old Callanish Stones that are located on the Isle of Lewis. They’re situated above the waters of Loch Roag and have the hills of Great Bernera as a backdrop. The structure is thought to even pre-date the infamous Stonehenge. The Callanish Stones are visible for several miles and form a circle. In the center of the ring, there is a single stone...

Favorite Lines from Viscount of Vice by Shana Galen

--> My new novella, Viscount of Vice , came out earlier this month, and I thought I’d share it with you using one of my favorite blog topics—favorite lines. Chapter One Still, it seemed harsh even for one such as Beelzebub to claim him when he was hanging naked from the window of one of the most prestigious addresses in Mayfair. Chapter Two “If you spend much more time with me,” he continued, “I’ll ruin your reputation.” Chapter Three She melted into him, and he wrapped his arms around her, pushing her back against the wall of the assembly hall. Chapter Four Henry Flynn , a husband? Who would marry the Viscount of Vice? Chapter Five He had doubts as to whether, if he went up, he’d come back down, but Emma might be up there, and so he put his foot on the first creaky step, knowing with each groan of the staircase he was closer to that eternity Lucifer had planned for him in hell. What’s your favorite line? Want to w...

The Trouble With Texas Cowboys Launch!

Two cowboys wanted to court Jill Cleary for all the wrong reasons. And then there was Sawyer O'Donnell... Can a girl ever have too many cowboys? No sooner does pint-sized spitfire Jill Cleary set foot on Fiddle Creek Ranch than she finds herself in the middle of a hundred-year-old feud. Quaid Brennan and Tyrell Gallagher are both tall, handsome, and rich...and both are courting Jill to within an inch of her life. She's doing her best to give these feuding ranchers equal time-too bad it's dark-eyed Sawyer O'Donnell who makes her blood boil and her hormones hum...   There's a feud going on in Burnt Boot, Texas and Jill and Sawyer are caught up in the middle of it, protecting each other's backs from the Gallaghers and the Brennans, even in the newest battle which the local folks call "the pig war." * * * * *  Maybe a little excerpt about how they got together in the first place: The scariest sight in the world is a woman’s finger on...
