Writer's Guilt

It's official. Two weeks ago, I finished my last shift at the day job, and I'm now a full-time writer. There's just one little problem... My brain doesn't want to write. It wants to read. This could be a good thing because I have nine RITA books sitting around the house, needing to be judged, but there's a guilty little part of me that says I should be doing more, writing more, more words, more, more, MORE... And I've realised that my expectations of myself have probably been set a little high the last few months. It started in November. You may know this month as NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month. It's the first time I've succeeded in completing the challenge and since the start of November, I basically wrote the last book in my London Steampunk series, Of Silk and Steam , in six weeks. I've also finished a short story, edits, most of a novella and half of a secret project I've been dabbling with, amongst the mer...

Cures for the V-Day Hangover

If you're reading this, several things may have happened to you last night. 1. You may have had a romantic evening with your significant other, which ended up with a bottle of wine and a pair of fluffy handcuffs. 2. You may have spend the night on the town with your single friends, partying it up like the wild young things you are. 3. You may have spent the night alone crying into a family-sized bag of Cheetos and watching "An Officer And A Gentleman" for the seventeenth time. From Wikimedia Commons If any of these things happened to you, you may have what I like to call the Valentine's Day Hangover. You know the feeling. That crash at the end of a conversation-heart sugar buzz, that irritation of spending a hundred bucks on a teddy that lasted about thirty seconds, the soul-crushing loneliness of realizing your relationship with a book boyfriend is totally one-sided. Yeah. I get all these things. So here's a fantastic cure for what ails you. The hair ...

GUEST LAUNCH PARTY + GIVEAWAY: R is for Rebel by Megan Mulry

Please welcome fellow Sourcebooks fiction author Megan Mulry, whose latest in her Unruly Royal women’s fiction series, R is for Rebel , is now in stores! Hello and Goodbye Well, hello Casablanca Authors! Thanks so much for having my Landmark Author self over to your digs to celebrate the publication of R IS FOR REBEL! This is the fourth and final book in the Unruly Royals series and—as many of you know from having written a series (serieses?)—it can be a triumphant and bittersweet moment when the last book is released. I’ve loved getting to know my characters and seeing how screwed up I could make them—they’re so much more deserving of their HEA that way, don’t you think?—but now it’s time to say bon voyage to the last of my little chicks and let them leave the nest. My characters also have a tendency to run screaming from the building the first time they realize they’re falling in love (and Abigail in R IS FOR REBEL is no exception), so I thought it’d be fun to ...

Valentine's Day, Schmalentine's Day

by Danielle Dresser I have a confession to make... Bah Humbug to Valentine's Day! I know, weird, right? Since I work on romance novels all day. But you know how there are people who you call the Grinch around Christmas? I'm that way with Valentine's Day. Maybe I've had one too many candy hearts, or I didn't get as many valentines when we had to exchange them in grade school. Who knows? And even though I have a real life valentine this year (and forever!), and it means I'll probably get flowers and chocolate and a nice dinner, I've just never been into it. So, with that in mind, I found some sarcastic Valentine's Day cards and images to share: I must admit that I do like how everything is pink and red (two of my favorite colors), and I will definitely be buying discount chocolate over the weekend. What about you--do you like Valentine's Day? I hope so!
