The Day the Rock Star Came to Town

As a longtime LA resident, I can admit that the city has its faults, including crowds, smog, traffic that seems to get worse by the year… but every now and then, something pretty awesome can happen here. Like a bona fide rock star stopping by to give a free lunchtime concert for his fans. Just two weeks ago, Elton John performed for about an hour in the parking lot of Tower Records on the Sunset Strip, to promote his new album and thank West Hollywood for supporting the AIDS Foundation. Not surprisingly, a huge number of people turned out, cramming the parking lot and lining up on the sidewalk outside Tower Records.  Even better, AOL live-streamed the whole event for those who couldn’t be there in person, so guess how I spent my lunch hour? I have a soft spot for Elton John’s music, which got frequent play in our house while I was growing up. “Bennie and the Jets” was one of my father’s favorites, “Tiny Dancer” one of my sister’s, and everyone liked “Croco...

Spring in the south

bee eating jelly at a party It’s spring in Western Australia! Bees, magpies, snakes and all the other hideous thing that want to kill you are waking up and getting active . snake spotted when I went for a run It also means flowers and sunshine and cleaning out the pool to get it ready for summer. Inside the house it means it looking at the piles of paper on my desk and thinking about sorting them out. The trouble is while working on a series I like to have all my notes to hand, which means when I’m working on more than one series I end up with lots of paper. Most of it is contained in a note book, but some series end up with an archive box full of old revisions and notes about main characters and minor characters and the world.   Sometimes though I just get lazy and I don’t pack away as often as I should so spring is an ideal reason to sort things out and throw things out. That is what I plan to do over the next month. Then I’ll start making plans for 2016. ...

Why My Next Series Features a World Tour...

by Olivia Cunning Next month, the final book in the Sinners on Tour series will be released! While I'm super excited any time a book is released, I'm a little sad about this one. No more Sinners? No more books about the crazy, sexy antics of my quirky, big-hearted rock stars? Say it ain't so! Coming in August... I guess all good things must come to an end. But what a ride! Sinners won't be completely gone from the fictional world of rock and roll. They're sure to make an appearance in the Exodus End series, which is next on my agenda. While Sinners toured the US and Canada, Exodus End is a more famous band and they're doing a world tour. ...which means... I need to do research. Lots and lots of research! But first, I need to pick the tour schedule. I will admit that I cheat a little bit when I do tour schedules. I use real band tour schedules and have my fake bands travel in the real bands' tour bus tire tracks. Or in the case of Exodus E...

Women of Rock!

by Olivia Cunning There aren't very many women rock stars. I admire those few have crushed the glass ceiling (guitar?) and made it in a male-dominated music genre. One of my favorite rock bands is Heart. Ann Wilson, who has one of the most beautiful voices in rock 'n' roll, and her younger sister, Nancy Wilson, who has amazing skills on the electric guitar, became superstars not once, but twice. In the mid-seventies, they released several successful albums and had hits such as Barracuda , Crazy on You , Magic Man, and the softer Dog and Butterfly . In the late 80s, Heart had several more hits, including These Dreams , What About Love , Never , and Alone . This summer they are on tour with Def Leppard. You know I want to see that show. I heart Heart. (and had major crushes on the members of Def Leppard in the 80s...) Another group of women who made it big in the rock 'n' roll genre are The Runaways. This was a band completely composed of teenage girls. Ther...
