Romance Authors Recommend...the Best Valentine's Day Gifts

Tomorrow is Valentine's Day, and if you're still looking for the perfect gift for your special someone, look beyond the candy heart and flowers. Shana Galen recommends... Offer to do a chore your valentine dislikes or might enjoy a break from. I'd love it if my husband would walk the dog one morning so I can sleep in or fold the laundry so I can put my feet up. Pixabay.com Gina Conkle recommends coffee dates... I love when Brian (hubs) suggests we go to Starbucks or one of our local coffee houses. It means quiet, uninterrupted conversation with him, and coffee dates don't cost much. Have a great Valentine's Day! Samantha Chase recommends: Making time to just be together.  It doesn't have to be a big romantic dinner or anything wild, just taking the time out of our hectic lives to spend an hour together to sort of catch up and reconnect.  So hard sometimes to remember to make time for each other, so pull up a chair, have some coffee or a favorite...

Gifts that Keep On Giving

Once upon a time, my grandmother was a wonderful giver of gifts. She always knew just the right thing to delight the recipient... Er, not exactly true. When I was a small child, she always gave me clothes. No child wants to open a box and find a new outfit instead of the doll they had their eyes on for months at the toy shop. Well, my sister did. She loved getting clothes... All right... My grandmother, an excellent gift giver when it came to everyone else on the planet, never knew quite what to get me. I guess I was a mystery to her. As evidence of this, I present... The faux brass monkey. Faux, because it's not even brass. It's made of plastic designed to look like brass, my Christmas gift from Grandma in 2005.  By 2005, I was used to getting gifts from Grandma that didn't make much sense to me. I was well-versed in "It's the thought that counts" and grateful for everything she gave, even if it went in the back of a closet. But the monkey... o...

Adventures with Coconut Water—Or, When You Become Known for Liking Something

Not long ago, someone gave me a giant can of coconut water. This wasn’t quite as random as it sounds, because the giver knows I like coconut. Actually, I’d go so far as to say I really like it. The coconut thingies are always my favorites in a box of chocolates. I’m not fond of getting caught in the rain, but I sure do enjoy piña coladas. Have you ever learned about a person’s favorite, or collection, and made that your first association with him or her? Like—to give a totally hypothetical example that is not something I ever did—if you learn a friend collects penguins, and then every gift you give him for five years has a penguin on it.  In my circle of acquaintances, this has become true for me and coconut in all its forms. Of which this is the best. Now, I know what you’re about to say: that coconut water smells pretty good, but it tastes like dirty grass clippings.* I totally agree. But it has the magic word “coconut” in the name, and thus I am occasion...

The Best Gift by Shana Galen

My daughter is now of the age where she can tell me what gifts she would like for Christmas. Pretty much everything she sees is added to the growing list, but a few things have been oft repeated—Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, a bike, the three little pigs and wolf (I think she means the figures to play with), and a shopping cart. Important question: can a three-year-old even ride a bike? Is that too young for a bike? I remember making similar lists when I was…well, not so very young! It’s fun to dream and wish and ultimately be surprised by what’s under the Christmas tree. And though I have loved every Christmas because they are spent with my family and friends and because I am reminded of The Gift of Christmas, there is one gift that stands out. There was one Christmas I was totally surprised and blown away. I was twelve or thirteen, I think, and my mother said we were going to U-Haul to pick up part of my Christmas present. This was on Christmas Eve, and I could not i...

All I want for Christmas

It was difficult to come up with an answer this year when I was asked what I wanted for Christmas. I really do have everything I need. But Christmas is about getting something you want, not need, right? Even then, I couldn't think of anything I wanted that someone else could give me. NY Times bestseller status? Sure! I'd love that. *sigh* I'm working on it. So, I watched a few commericals to see if I could come up with some ideas. A Lexus? No thanks. I love my 10 year-old convertible and would rather drive it into the ground. Kay Jewlers is having a sale. I make jewelry and have more than I'll ever wear. Then I saw a commercial for Garmin...a GPS. I have one of those, but it's been taken over by mean pixies and has decided to play tricks on me. One day I was trying to get to our new RWA meeting place. For some reason, it started a few miles ahead of where I was. It must have heard me muttering that I knew how to get out of my own damn neighborhood. Still, I was ...
