Interview with My Six-Year-Old Daughter

Not long ago, my daughter (known online as Little Miss R) brought this essay home from her first-grade class. Look at that! I have a cool job! I was pretty delighted by this. This past weekend, LMR picked up a pretty bad virus that kept her home with me for four days straight. To pass the time on one of those days, I decided to interview her. Here's how it went. I typed exactly what she said--except for the end, when she begged me to let her have a turn at the keyboard. *     *     * Me: You’re home today because you’re sick. And I’m home with you because this is where I do my work. What do you know about my work? LMR: You write books. And you write them about ladies in dresses. They all have shiny words on the front. Me: That’s all true. What are your favorite kinds of books? LMR: Ones that are Garfield books and princess books. I like them because there are movies based on them and I like movies that are from books. Me: So you like w...

Cover Reveal and a Sneak Peek at HER LONE WOLF, Book 2 in the X-OPS Series!

Heroes and Heartbreakers already did the cover reveal for HER LONE WOLF (X-OPS Book 2) , but I wanted to post it here in case you haven't seen it!  I so love it!  The models are so perfect for the hot (if volatile) wolf shifter hero and his sexy kickbutt FBI agent heroine!  Sourcebooks has a rockin' art department! Leaving him was Impossible… It took everything she had for FBI Special Agent Danica Beckett to walk away from the man she loved. But if she wants to save his life, she has to keep her distance. Now, with a killer on the loose and the stakes higher than ever before, the Department of Covert Ops is forcing  these former lovers into an uneasy alliance…whether they like it or not. Seeing her again is even worse... The last thing Clayne Buchanan wants is to be shackled to the woman who broke his heart. She gets under his skin in a way no one ever has and makes him want things he has no right to anymore. All he has to do is suffer through this case a...

I’m Thankful for Cover Artists

Who said goblins can't be hot! I will never forget the first time I had to fill out a cover art form. I was both excited and terrified—what if I got it wrong somehow? Like every author I had dreamed of that moment when I first saw my name on a cover, and I wanted that cover to be awesome, one that made the reader pick up the book. Because covers are the first thing the reader sees it has to be eye catching and convey a sense of the book. A cover has a lot of work to do. But I had (and still have) no idea what makes a good cover, all I know is, I know what I like when I see it. Even after seven novellas and a couple of novels I still struggle when it comes to cover art descriptions. I love this one :) So this is heartfelt thank you to all the cover artists who have seen my notes and have come up with something that captures the book and is beautiful/hot/intriguing/enticing and awesome!

Pretty as a Picture

by Libby Malin www.LibbysBooks.com Sourcebooks' artists have done it again! The cover for my April release, My Own Personal Soap Opera , is in and I love, love, love, love it! Let me count the ways: The cover captures the spirit of the book--humorous women's fiction where the heroine's main question is: where am I going? The cover plays off the word "soap" by having the woman sitting in a tub. The end of the book has the heroine in a tub, so it's a really nice overlap. The cover "brands" my kind of story because it has similar elements to my first Sourcebooks release, Fire Me --girl's partially obscured face in the lower left corner, blue-sky, cloudy (or bubbly!) background, a sense of impishness and wonder. So, thank you, Sourcebooks artists for another fantastic job! Covers ar e so important, and authors rarely have control over what goes on them. One of the things I've loved about Sourcebooks is how they ask authors to let them know what k...

Sharon's new book cover!

Am I the only author who sits for weeks, or maybe months, wondering with trepidation what their publishing design crew is going to come up with for their book cover? It is a rhetorical question because I know for a fact that many of you have expressed the trauma of a cover that just wasn’t right for some reason. I didn’t fret over it too much the first time around – ignorance basically – but was eventually faced with the anguishing dilemma of what to do when the sample proudly unveiled by my editor was, shall we just say, a bit too “sweet” for my brand of manly Mr. Darcy! Eventually it all worked out and after about a dozen evolutions I ended up with a fabulous cover for Mr. and Mrs. Fitzwilliam Darcy ~ Two Shall Become One . Don’t you agree? Yep, the design folks came through and exceeded my wildest imaginings! Fate, divine intervention, my persistence, or plain market savvy – whatever the driving force, my “final” cover is amazing. When it came to Loving Mr. Darcy ~ Journeys Beyond P...

If a Picture = 1000 Words, Does 2 Picture = 2000 Words?

Yesterday, as most of the romance writing and reading community knows, was the day the Rita and Golden Heart finalists were announced and I had a cyber party on my blog where people could "squee" about their finals, their friends finals, or just release the tension of waiting to hear. I did this because I had such a GREAT time doing it last year. (And I'll be doing it again next year.) Luckily, I didn't have a pony in this race, (next year = whoooole other story) but I was rooting right along with everyone and hoping to see names I knew. But I was also celebrating. Because what most people didn't realize was, it was the day my next 2 covers, for Wild Blue Under and Catch of a Lifetime were making their public debut. And now I'd like to share them with you:

A Picture is Worth a 100,000 Words

By: Mary Margaret Daughtridge The art department at Sourcebooks is ready to start work on the cover of my next book, so they emailed me the other day to get my input. Fact is, until the last couple of years, I never paid much attention to covers. Now that I do, I’m noticing there’s a language in what is pictured. Like the metallic half-tones in which photographic images of a man and a woman seem to swim under the surface. That’s romantic suspense. Two Adirondack chairs in pale watercolor washes? Mainstream with romantic elements—likely to be sad. White on white or beige on white with tasteful gold accents—best selling writer. Could be lots of sex but if there are flowers in addition—well, it depends on the size of the flowers, and if they are embossed. Regardless, the story is about the crème de la crème. Dukes and suchlike. Then there are the clinch covers. The woman’s bountiful bosoms, the man’s rippling torso, clutched together in a position that looks as unlikely as it looks uncomf...
