Mother Daughter Camping

I'm not a camper. I like indoor plumbing and my adjustable tempurpedic bed and wifi. But when my daughter and I were invited to go to a mother-daughter weekend at a girls' camp, I agreed to go. After all, just because I don't like camping doesn't mean she won't like it. The good news was that the camp's cabins were air conditioned and had indoor plumbing. The bad news was that our little party was assigned to a wagon (which did have AC) but which was a bit of a walk to the restroom. Of course, Princess Galen thought the wagons were the best thing ever. She also thought the best thing ever was our first activity bright and early Saturday morning: climbing wall. Yes, she wanted me to climb a 40-foot wall at 9 in the morning after sleeping on a bunk bed. Here we are suited up in our harnesses. Did I climb to the top? Um, no. I had to save my strength for the day (and night) ahead. Princess Galen climbed to the top. Twice. This was the second time. She...

Ode to the Modern Bathroom

by Amanda Forester I returned today from a series of camping adventures that has taken me over several states and allowed me to explore many wonderful settings.   After marveling at the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, Mount Shasta, and several other incredible places I can say without hesitation that God's creation is absolutely awe-inspiring.   As a historical author, going camping for a while and "roughing it" was useful to gain some authenticity regarding what it must have been like for people to actually live in medieval Scotland or Regency England.   Despite the rather romantic notions I hold dear regarding both times in history, there is an unfortunate reality about lack of running water that as I camper, I found hard to deny. I do enjoy camping and the opportunity to explore scenery that is vibrant and fresh, but after a few days without a shower I confess to being less than vibrant and decidedly not at all fresh.   After a few days I had my hair i...

Camping Mama

by Amanda Forester Some of my favorite memories as a kid are the many times we went camping as a family. It was great fun! I remember playing in lakes, swimming in ice cold glacier water, or catching frogs in muddy ponds. Sleeping in a tent outside was always a thrill (except for the time we forgot the rain fly and it started to pour in the middle of the night and the tent filled up with water). Camping food is the best too. Somehow anything cooked over an open flame is delicious! Hot dogs roasted over the fire, “dirty” eggs in the morning, and of course s’mores at night. My brother and I had different strategies for roasting marshmallows. He would carefully roast his over red coals until each side was golden brown. I was too impatient and would plunge mine into the fire until it burst into flame. I’d wait a few second for the flames to melt the insides, then blow it out and eat the charred thing. With chocolate and graham cracker I swear the black ashen husk of the marshmallow was bar...
