How Much Alpha is Too Much Alpha?

Like so many romance readers, the occasional alpha male makes me smile. A strong man who knows what he wants and how to get it is definitely one of my favorite things about the genre. Of course, there are some characters that pass from the realm of the alpha, into the realm of the jerk. Never a good thing.   This happened a lot in romance novels in the 1980's and 90's. (Okay, yes, I am definitely dating myself here.) One of my favorite romance novels when I was younger was WHITNEY, MY LOVE by Judith McNaught. While a lovely story in many ways, filled with fabulous, sexy situations and compelling characters, it had an alpha who crossed the line more than once. The duke who was our hero lied to the heroine for months about who he was, only to rape her when she pissed him off. How, I ask you, does a woman come back from that? Somehow, the leading lady took him back and made it all ok for the both of them, after a bit of groveling on his part, bu...

Romancing the Bard by Christy English

When I began writing my first romance HOW TO TAME A WILLFUL WIFE, I had no idea I was re-telling a play by Shakespeare. I dreamed of a woman and a man meeting in her bedroom, when he knew that they were engaged and she did not. The first chapters of the novel were born from that dream. I got up that morning, went to my writers group for tea and scones, and sat down and wrote the beginning of the book straight from the dream. Needless to say, unlike Kate in The Taming of the Shrew , my heroine Caroline is not tamed. Indeed, she does her best to tame her gorgeous, stubborn husband, Anthony. Their battle of wills often ends up in bed, but as the novel goes on, ...

GUEST LAUNCH PARTY + GIVEAWAY: How to Tame a Willful Wife by Christy English

Please welcome Casablanca Author Christy English ! Her regency romance HOW TO TAME A WILLFUL WIFE is in stores this month—a regency take on The Taming of the Shrew… What is my new Regency Romance, HOW TO TAME A WILLFUL WIFE about? Tall, dark, unruly men and the women who stand up to them. One woman in particular, Caroline Montague. When my Regency hero Anthony Carrington comes home from the wars with Napoleon, he knows that he will marry his commanding officer’s daughter. What he doesn’t know is that she throws knives, rides astride her warhorse Hercules wearing breeches, and can outshoot any man with a bow and arrow. Not exactly the kind of bride he might find if he went hunting on the Marriage Mart. In this version of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew , Anthony does his best to tame Caroline from the moment they meet. And Caroline, of course, will not be tamed. Though they discover they both have a taste for passion, and a passion for each other, it takes them t...
