Who Would You Be If You Fell Back In Time? by Gina Conkle

This one's for the history buffs who picture themselves in other times and places. Imagine yourself on Iceland. History is being made and you play a role in it. Who would you be? Read the four profiles and pick which woman you most identify with. The answers to these real Viking women can be found below. A)      You’re a quiet, deep thinker. There’s a quality of stillness about you that draws people in. Because of these characteristics, you fall into a leadership role whether it’s something you want or not. You’re generous and fair…as long as people abide by your rules. If they don’t, watch out! B)       You’re a tad headstrong but smart. When the odds are against you, you regroup and try a different approach. Some might say you’re wily as a fox. Using feminine wiles and your brain is fair game in your opinion. And menial labor? Not top on your list of things to do. C)       You’re gen...

Florence Nightingale: Victorian Rebel

by Tracey Devlyn Must I pick only one woman who fascinates me? LOL Ah, well, then I select Miss Florence Nightingale (1820 - 1910)—nurse, writer, statistician, and hospital reformist. Florence Nightingale was a Victorian rebel. Born into a well-connected British family, Nightingale was expected to marry well and produce a bevy of children, the same as any wealthy young lady of that era. But Nightingale followed a different path, one that would put her at odds with her beloved family and one that she believed to be a calling from God. Florence Nightingale became a nurse. In 1854 (Crimean War), Nightingale and 38 volunteer nurses set off for Scutari, Turkey after hearing about the deplorable conditions of the wounded British soldiers. W hen she arrived, the situation was much worse than she had anticipated. The soldiers were malnourished and without proper bedding, and many were filthy and still wearing their gore-covered uniforms. In addition, she soon learned that the army hospital...

Fascinating Women...Good & Bad by C.H. Admirand

There are women in my life who have made a difference...so from my point of view...they were fascinating. Growing up I was lucky enough to live next door to my great aunt and uncle, and two doors down from my grandparents. What's not to love about that? The door was always open at both houses. My great aunt always had cookies in the cookie jar she kept right by the back door and on hot summer nights, she would read poems and stories to us on their screen porch. One of my favorites to this day was hearing The Owl and the Pussycat. ;) My great uncle loved to barbeque and at the drop of a hat would pull out his grill and cook up hot dogs and hamburgers. He'd whistle early in the morning, and I remember waking up to the sound and being too young to tie my red plaid sneakers, but I'd slip them on and go outside before anyone else was up. He'd tie my sneakers and we'd start the day hand-in-hand. My grandmother was a cheese and crackers grandma. She baked ice box cookie...

Women Who Rock! by Sara Humphreys

When I sat down to write about a woman I admire I couldn't pick just one . I mean it. How could I? There are just far too many super fab chicks out there to select only one and I'm not just talking about the famous ones. To be quite honest, the majority of women who came to mind were women who've touched my life in a meaningful way. However, since it would probably bore the bejeezus out of you to read only about ladies I know...I thought I'd balance it out with some famous gals too. So here is my list of the Top 5 Women Who Rock! 5: Meryl Streep- She is the single best actress of any generation. Seriously. Think about the range of her characters and films she's done, from Sophie's Choice , to A Cry in the Dark , to The Devil Wears Prada . The woman is a genius but you know why I admire her? She's a lady who conducts herself with grace and at the same time doesn't take herself too seriously. Also, she's been married to the same man for several decade...

Fascinating Women: Elizabeth Stamatina Fey

by Tamara Hogan When I learned that this month's blog theme was fascinating women, I immediately called dibs on Elizabeth Stamatina (Tina) Fey.  Fey, who honed her writing and acting chops at Second City Chicago, came to cultural prominence as a writer and actor at "Saturday Night Live," where she ultimately became the show's first female head writer and helmed the "Weekend Update" desk with Jimmy Fallon and then Amy Poehler. She adapted the screenplay for, and starred in, the movie "Mean Girls," and teamed again with Poehler for "Baby Mama." She's the writer, star and executive producer of the NBC comedy "30 Rock." And, as if being one of the strongest sketch comedy, television and movie writers around wasn't achievement enough, last month she hit #1 on the New York Times best-seller list with her hilarious and poignant memoir, "Bossypants." Writer, actor, wife, mother, producer, Emmy winner, reluctant c...
