Ponder, Plot & Plan…and a Highland Conquest GIVEAWAY!

It’s December already, and alas, my NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) goals died with a pathetic whimper about mid-way through November—the best laid plans…   Which was the problem, really, because in terms of my writing process, I’m what is called a plotter (as opposed to a pantster) and by the time I’d finished HIGHLAND BETRAYAL, book 3 in The Sons Of Gregor MacLeod series, I didn’t have time to plan book 4, HIGHLAND CAPTURE, before NaNo started. My process looks something like this: first I mull on the story and let it percolate—I may look through Pinterest and find images for characters and settings that appeal to me or tap notes into my phone when they come to me in the middle of the night. Then I work on character profiles, interspersing those with writing down scenes in random order. And at some point I pull out my plot graph, which I use for every book.   This graph comes from writing guru Michael Hauge, although his version is much more detailed: ...

For Love of Betas

I don't often write about beta heroes, because alphas are so interesting. But I have a theory that every beta is an alpha to the right woman, or at least, is the right man for her. In my novel,  Love On A Midsummer Night , beta Raymond  Earl of Pembroke waits for ten years before he is reunited with the love of his life. But even after all that time, he is still in love with her, and as they begin to work out their differences, and heal the pain of the past, he is loving and kind. Raymond supports and helps Arabella even after she had left him flat to marry a duke. When he realizes that she was kidnapped by her father and forced into an unwanted marriage, he becomes even sweeter to her. One thing I really love about betas is their sweetness. Another hero who is an alpha but who has some beta tendencies is Jamie Frasier from  Outlander . Like all good betas, he listens to his wife and sympathizes with her, even when he doesn't agree...

What Do We Want in a Hero + a Give Away

Today I am celebrating the launch of my latest romance, HOW TO SEDUCE A SCOT. And one of my favorite things about my new novel is the hero, Highlander Alexander Waters. As I was writing about Alex and Catherine and their quest for true love, I asked myself, wh at do we want in a romantic hero?  I'm going to make a list here, but I would love it if you would continue it. Leave a comment with your answer below, and I'll put your name in the hat to win a signed copy of HOW TO SEDUCE A SCOT. I want a romance hero to have: 1) A Sexy Voice    Catherine describes Alex's voice in a few ways: warm, deep, honeyed...the list goes on.  2) Beautiful Eyes     Alex has dark, chocolate brown eyes. Delicious. 3) A Beautiful Body     Alex Waters is well over six feet tall, with broad shoulders and long dark hair... well...he's gorgeous.  4) Gives Great Foot Rubs    ...
