New Tuesday, Jun 7th is release day for TO LOVE A WOLF, Book 4 in my SWAT Series, and I'm so excited! Because this is Cooper's story!  I know, I always say I don't have a favorite hero in my books, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that SWAT officer/werewolf Landry Cooper doesn't hold a special place in my heart. Because Cooper is inspired by my hubby! Like Cooper, Hubby is former Army EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal— twenty years), and has a lot of the same personality quirks as Cooper. What influences you to read a book? The setting? The characters? The plot? The suspense? The humor? The sexiness? The thrill? So see, as readers, we even read under the influence. :) So what influences us to write? In Destiny of the Wolf , the heroine was in a vehicle accident. I was in that accident. I saw the air bag inflate. Felt the pain from it. Also in Destiny of the Wolf , the heroine must rappel off a mountain. I've done that. She turned upside down by accident. Who would do such a thing on purpose? :) Except when I did it, that time was off a five-story building. And it was embarrassing. So what influenced me to write scenes like this? Actually living them, except changing them a little to suit the story...different time of year, different location, werewolf vs. human. In the past, Casa Babes have woven a fun tale out of a whacky cast of characters, the tale growing wilder and wilder until the end. Now a word about sexy shapeshifters~~ Years ago, I wrote a futuristic where the heroine shapeshifts into a panther and her brother, a dragon. So that was my first shapeshifter story. But I finally decided on werewolves. In part, because I loved reading mythology and legends when I was growing up, and partly because I loved Call of the Wild and White Fang by Jack London. The images he created for me about wolves stuck with me all those years, and I didn’t even realize it until I was asked so many times, why werewolves? Because wolves can see better, hear better, sense smells better, run better…yet in some ways are like our steadfast companion dogs. Okay, so Little Red Riding Hood comes to mind too. “All the better to see you with, my dear…” Or something to that effect. :) But when I was creating my werewolf world, I wanted something that was as believable as...

Not only do the situations that we, as authors, grew up with influence the mood and feel of our stories, but oftentimes once we've been through something it can become a part of a story. We've lived it, experienced it, can write about it. I've written about a car accident my mother and I were in, a boating accident also when I was a child, swimming with sharks and manta rays, exploring a jungle-like swamp in Florida as a teen, rappeling down a mountainside, firing weapons, and hand-to-hand combat. Then too, I often include real life drama in my stories that I've read about. I research wolves for my werewolf series, and for all the stories I write about I include real places, even if I change the names or combine different places in an area to make it my own unique place. Every year, the day after Christmas is not Black Friday and fighting the multitudes of frenzied shoppers to buy, buy, buy for us, but a day of setting up the Christmas tree and decorations, eating leftover turkey, pumpkin pie, and my daughter's birthday cake, and making up our Christmas lists. How did it get to be this late in the year already? Next thing we know, it'll be New Years! But for now, we'll settle for the Christmas holidays--seeing Christmas shows, attending Christmas parties, and the inevitable Christmas shopping. And since I'm not working this weekend, I'm off to finishing up teaching two online classes, preparing for three for December and writing Plight of the Wolf. When I wrote Heart of the Wolf , it really was a creation from my heart--a story that evolved from my love of Jack London's White Fang and Call of the Wild --the first stories I'd ever read about wolves--of loving mythologies from all over the world, of the love of reading to escape my world while I was growing up. I wanted to do something different--create a world that was real enough, even though it's an urban fantasy. So when it won 3rd place out of 7 finalists in the Golden Pen, I was really proud of Heart of the Wolf , my first win ever. Sure, it didn't take 1st place, but I was thrilled. The judge from one of the big publishing houses said she loved the unique twist on a horror story. There's something to be said about any species who truly care about one another--not that there's this primal urge to mate with another and that's the extent of the relationship--like in so many kinds of animals. Procreation of the species, a biological urge, nothing more. But like with wolves that for the most part mate for life, it's really nice to know that some species feel so close to one another when they choose a mate, it's forever. :) So I dedicate the Don't Cry Wolf video book trailer to any species of animal that takes their mate relationship seriously--and loves them forever. :) Terry, who is still taking care of a sick mother, who is getting better though, because she's demanding lots more...LOL...... I'm so sorry I'm so late in posting, and that I haven't been commenting on posts, but life is just impossible right now. I took my mother in for surgery Wednesday, finally got her home yesterday afternoon, and she's so sick I may have to take her back to the hospital. I've spent all morning on the phone trying to get her something to take to stop the nausea, and I'm afraid, playing catch up, I'm behind on everything. Course, that's when I get bear orders, and everything else. Still not half unpacked, and well, everything is turned upside down as usual. Working on getting endorsements for Don't Cry Wolf and it's coming out March 1st!!! So that's the highlight in my life! Don't you love the cover??? Hopefully October things will begin to settle down! I'm in the middle of the move from hell...ever have one of those? Actually over the years I've had several. One time we were in the middle of nowhere when the U-Haul truck my dad was driving broke down. No fixing it. We had to wait at a service station for hours before U-Haul could deliver another truck as big as the one we had--the one with the storage above the cab even. My dad was one of these perfectionists. And so when we had loaded the truck, it was done perfectly. Now, in the middle of some small town at a gas station, we had to unload everything, and reload it---only with some big guys' help, and they did it the way they wanted to. All wrong. Heavy stuff needs to go into the part near the cab. Everything was loaded backwards. Then another time, it was like the old days--Conestoga Wagon time...in the middle of the mountains somewhere--hey, I was a kid...all I know is at that point we had a car and we were hauling a big U-Haul trailer. I've been totally absentee lately what with getting a part-time job, teaching online writing courses, selling my house, trying to move, and much, much more. But through the stress of it all, one thing keeps me sane. Writing. As soon as I'm back in the world I'm creating, I have to face all kinds of new adversity. But it's fiction. And it's fun. :) Are writers sadists? Forcing their characters through horrendous ordeals to see how they can muddle through and come out on top? :) Whether I'm reading other authors' works or my own as I'm writing them, I love immersing myself in the stories, watching the characters grow and succeed. Though I love posting my Sinfully Sexy Saturdays on Wickedly Romantic with hot hunks to feast your eyes on, the truth is, it's the hero and heroine coupled together that make the story!! http://wickedlyromantic.blogspot.com/2008/07/sinfully-sexy-saturday-bathers.html Throughout the grueling conflict, throughout the heartaches and difficulty, it's the hero and heroine's struggle that makes the story worth reading. Their growth, their love for one another, and resolving the conflicts to give us that happily ever after--that after glow is what I love to read about. There's nothing better than finishing the story, and wishing I had another one of the author's books to jump into and begin delving through all the troubles that a new delicious hero and heroine manage to get themselves into. So yeah, it's fun having a sexy hero to drool over, but it's the heroine and hero's relationship that make it even sexier and the happily ever after that makes it a winner ...

To me, research makes a book so much more fun. If I can find something unique to the area, or about some aspect of what I'm writing, I love to include it. But there's nothing worse than reading several pages of how a paddle wheeler works or every detail of the boat's insides and outsides, unless it's important to the characters in the story. And even so, adding too much can make the story drag. But getting some of the details right is important. So research is necessary. But how much is too much? I was reading a historical romance where the author went into the aspects of how vomit and dog feces were part of a medieval castle's decor, and the same with how unsanitary the streets were. Uhm, okay, yes, it's true. But though it's realistic, I really had a hard time with seeing the hero and heroine in a romantic light when I'm thinking of them wading through such unsanitized conditions. :) On the other hand, some things are important.
