Test Drive: An Excerpt

Because I just went through a major round of edits on Test Drive , the first in my Body Shop Bad Boys series coming in 2016, I thought I'd share an excerpt that shows Johnny Devlin and Lara Valley interact. Johnny's had it bad for Lara from day one, but she's all too aware of his playboy ways. Still, he can't stay away when he sees her working at the bar. Enjoy! ____________________________________________ “Uh huh. Sure you weren’t asking him about Sue’s frame of mind?” Johnny teased. Over Foley’s shoulder, he saw Lara smiling at a woman over the bar. His heart stuttered, and he did his best to act cool, collected. She’s not interested. She’s a nice girl. Leave her alone. Like clockwork, his perverse, inner loudmouth had him offering to order the next round.   “Be right back. And remember, don’t hate the player, hate the game—when I win . Suckers.” He left the swearing table, grinning, and nabbed a free place at the crowded bar. Lara, Sue, and a fe...

The Jetset Life

My dentist's receptionist called me at the end of September, and the conversation was kind of surreal. Receptionist: Ms. Browning-Erwin, you have an appointment for September 29. This is your reminder. Me: Oh. Sorry. I have to reschedule. I'll be in London. Receptionist: That's okay. We have a week later. Me: Um, nope. I'll be in Paris. Oops. Receptionist: How about a Tuesday, two weeks after that? Me: Sure... oh. Hmm. No. I'll be in Napa. Let's just make it for sometime in November. I think I'm free then. True story. I'm pretty sure she thought I was just showing off by the end of the conversation. My husband took me to London and Paris for our 25th Anniversary, and it was magical. Then last week, I was in Napa to celebrate the very special milestone birthday of a friend. I'm sure there are stories to be told, but I just got back. I actually wrote this before leaving. Check my Facebook for updates! In between, I attended a...

Where Regency and Medieval Fun Meet

What does the Regency period in English history have in common with the English medieval period? Absolutely nothing. Except that I write in both genres, and I love them both. In the Regency period, manners make the man and the woman, and in my Regency fiction, I love seeing how far my characters can push against the edges of those rules without making them give. Catherine Middlebrook in HOW TO SEDUCE A SCOT  wears bonnets and gloves, and keeps her pretty curls tucked neatly away. She speaks modestly and maintains her decorum until she meets the Waters family, and learns the meaning of passion from the handsome Alexander, and the joy of throwing knives from his sister, Mary Elizabeth. Now, in the medieval period, manners were not considered particularly important. In the lives of kings and queens, politics ruled every waking moment. The personal really was political, when people like Eleanor of Aquitaine spent their lives manipulating their family members to ga...

In Two Minutes I Can Make a Horse by Jade Lee

So after 31 years of marriage, my husband and I... A. Did nothing. We ate pizza, watched The Blacklist, and then went to sleep. B. Went to Italy to eat pasta and see things. C. Re-did my website as a husband/wife bonding project. I’m sorry. He’s dead now and buried in the backyard, but that’s what comes from husband/wife bonding projects. D. Joined a racquetball league as a double’s team. And yes, he’s dead now. We would have won a game, but the ball dropped right in front of him and he couldn’t hit it. So again, he’s buried in the backyard. Answer: B – We went to ITALY!  Woo hoo! There are pictures of cool graffiti in Florence here.  http://jadeleeauthor.com/florence-has-fun-graffiti-2  As for the other stuff, we both love The Blacklist and often eat pizza and go to sleep, so A is our usual life. And in case you were worried, my husband is not dead and he is not buried in the backyard. That’s because the initial husband/wife bonding project of a new websit...

Serial Romance: The Sport of Baronets

Two weeks from today, my Romance of the Turf series begins with a prequel novella, The Sport of Baronets . It's been a few years since I've launched an all-new series, and I'm excited! I hope readers love visiting the Regency world of horse-racing and meeting the talented but troubled Chandler family at its heart. First to get an HEA? Hannah, youngest of the four Chandler siblings. But when the story begins, romance is the furthest thing from her mind. She's prepared to battle with the hated Crosby family over the ownership of a champion colt. Nothing goes quite as she expects, though, and Hannah soon finds herself swept into a mystery and an enemies-to-lovers romance. To see some images that inspired the story, check out my Pinterest board here . The Sport of Baronets  will be published on November 3--but there are a few ways you can read it earlier! It'll be up on NetGalley next Monday, October 26. And yesterday, Sourcebooks Casablanca started sending out s...

Willard and Ben by Victoria Roberts

Rats. Are. Disgusting. I don't think many people would disagree with me. After my husband and I married 22 years ago, we rented a very small two bedroom home out in the middle of nowhere because that's what we could afford at the time. The house sat near a creek, and I thought how lovely. Sure. That was the dream until we found a handful of rats invading our territory. My first misconception was that rats were drawn to dirty, trashy houses. Well, my house was spotless, and we didn't have any trash around. But that didn't matter. The creek in the back of our house drew the rats. And boy did those critters love our basement. My husband would often find those buggers in the traps, and I can't lie. They were gray, ugly, and sometimes as big as cats. *shiver* Note: Thank God my husband grew up on a farm. My husband and I have come a long way since then. We have a house we call our own and have two kids and a mixed lab named Zoe. So imagine my surprise when...

Romantic Short Fiction

by M.L. Buchman I started out as a Science Fiction fan. (Okay, caught me, I still am.) I came to romance quite late in life, when the publisher of my first novel (a quirky fantasy that would eventually launch my Deities Anonymous series) dragged me to a romance convention in 1996. My first ever writing conference was the Romance Writer's of America National Conference. I learned several things: The 1,800 women who attended were very serious about romance and the business of romance. Being one of the 7 men to attend left me standing out in the cold quite often. Despite being published, there were agents who wouldn't even talk to me. Despite the "Sale" sticker on my name tag, they just assumed I was only a boyfriend. Romance was a heck of a lot of fun! I read my first three romances at night during the conference (because who needs to sleep at a conference) and I discovered they were a blast. There are no short fiction romance markets. Say what? Coming fro...
