Happy Almost-New Year! (Plus, Book Giveaway)

Is it just me, or did Christmas come on like a runaway train in 2015? Granted, everything seems to speed up after Thanksgiving, but this time around, I was caught flat-footed. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I felt so unprepared for the holidays! Which made the week after Christmas more welcome than usual. The Big Feed has taken place, the gifts have been exchanged, the shopping is done—unless you’re among those enthusiasts who hit the malls on December 26—and you can simply relax, enjoy the company of family and friends, immerse yourself in good books, take in some new movies, and watch the year wind to its close. It’s natural enough during that week to reflect on the year that’s passing and the one that’s about to dawn. Many people make New Year’s Resolutions, some triumphantly realized, others possibly destined to fail! My own list of those tends to be short and fairly general, mainly because life is an unscripted event, and it’s easier to adapt a list to suit a ...

The Promise of a New Beginning...

By Robin Kaye When I was a kid, I did a lot of skiing—my family had a place in Sun Valley, Idaho and we’d usually spend three weeks a year there skiing. Like most other skiers, every night before I went to bed wearing my pajamas inside out and backward—a signal to the snow gods that I was ready for fresh powder—I’d pray for snow. I prayed, not only because the skiing on fresh powder would be great, no, I had another reason—I longed to ski virgin snow. I’d wake up extra early after a snow and arrive on the mountain well before the lifts opened with a backpack full of bribes for the lift operators—warm scones and hot coffee worked the best. They’d be bundled up against the early morning chill, sweeping the snow from the chair lifts and sometimes, if I got very lucky, they’d let me ride up before the mountain officially opened so I could be the first skier down. There’s nothing like skiing virgin snow—the only sound you hear is the wind whispering through the trees, the swish of your own ...

A New Day

"Tomorrow is a new day with no mistakes in it yet." Lucy Maud Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables The first day of the new year my local public television station aired the 1985 television version of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic Anne of Green Gables . Despite some vocal protests of some other family members who would have preferred to watch something else, I won control of the remote and we watched the classic tale. Watching it reminded me of reading the Anne books when I was a young girl and later watching the screen adaptation. Viewing it again made me want to move to Prince Edward Island all over again – it is so beautiful! So many scenes are favorites of mine: when she dyed her hair green and Marilla decided she could stay at Green Gables after all; when she nearly drowned in the boat playing Lady of Shalott; when she accidently got Diana Barry drunk and then later when she saved Diana’s sister’s life. I loved the character of Anne because despite whatever hardships she f...

Happy New Year From Horace!

"You are so taking me to the party!" Horace hopped up and down on the polished wood surface of Stasi's dresser as she rummaged through her closet. "No." Her word was muffled but that didn't stop the power she exuded. The six-inch grayish stone gargoyle snarled as he absently chewed on a razor sharp claw. "It's New Year's Eve." "And your point is?" Stasi pulled out a cobalt silk strapless dress with a flirty hem that revealed more than it covered. She hung the dress on a nearby hook and returned to the closet to find shoes. "I don't want to be alone."The 700-year plus witch ignored his mock-sorrowful tone. "You won't be alone. Bogie isn't going either." She looked over her shoulder and smiled at her beloved and magickal Yorkie/Chihuahua that tended to float along the floor instead of walking and disappeared if he thought he was in trouble. At the moment, the dog was sleeping peacefully in the middle ...

My New Year's Resolution

By Robin Kaye Okay, I know it’s the first day of February. I’m late. It’s the story of my life but we won’t go there. Today I’m thrilled to be taking the first steps in accomplishing my New Year’s Resolution. I’m finally going to lose weight. I know, you’re all waiting with baited breath to hear how I’m going to do that, right? I’m walking while I work. It all started last July. I was in Chicago to meet with my publisher. I spent some time with one of my favorite cousins who lives in the area. Dr. Diane Wallis is one of the top cardiologists in Chicago and a real sweetheart. We were talking about why I have such a hard time losing weight. I mean, I do all the right things, I work out, I eat right, I don’t snack, I don’t drink much, but I’m still overweight. She said it was because I have strong genes. Like that should make sense to me. When she saw I had no clue what she meant, she explained that when man was designed, we were meant to be a nomadic people and walk eight to ten hours a ...

And now a word from our Sponsor…

We interrupt this delightful foray into cruise chips and creativity to bring a little message from your devoted publicist… First of all, Happy New Year! I, for one, love the New Year—a time to rejuvenate and make plans (not necessarily resolutions) for the year ahead. And we certainly have a big year ahead of us. The spring of 2009 marks the fourth season of Sourcebooks Casablanca, and I am excited to see this list of romance and women’s fiction get into stores. There are some new faces and some returning authors with a diverse and sexy line of books!! 2009 also marks what will probably be one of the toughest years in publishing history. Amid the reports of down sales, staffs being downsized and books being returned, it is important to remember that Sourcebooks, Inc., is one publisher that has not “gone under.” We’ve had some trials and tribulations, but I am relieved to say that Sourcebooks is on the other side of the publishing industry—the side that is doing wel...

Happy Holidays

No post today about what you should be doing--enjoy the holiday season! But don't think I won't have info to tell you in the New Year! :-) 2009 is going to be a big year for Sourcebooks, which means being more aggressive and thinking even further outside the box... I'm excited to get started on the Spring season! Hugs to all, Danielle
