What's Hot...

by Judi Fennell I'm writing this on Saturday afternoon to post on Sunday because I'm in the Northeast and it's definitely NOT hot here as we wait for Irene. It's been raining since about 1 (5 hours ago) and I'm keeping an ear focused on the basement where our battery back-up sump pump will squeal when it's services are called upon. I'm hoping that doesn't happen. As long as we don't lose power, we should be fine. So, what IS hot here in the Northeast? Let's say, first of all, generators. They're hot. How hot? Well, when I went to Home Depot on Tuesday to get a generator, I got the second-to-last "affordable" one in stock. The guy who helped me said they'd had a run on them. I know this is the first time I've ever bought a generator for a storm. What else is hot? Flashlights, apparently. Here's my local Walmart on Friday: Water, too, is apparently, one of the hottest items around. My sister took this pictur...

Wicked Good

If you've read my bio, you know that I'm a big fan of fairy tales. Heck, if you even glanced at my website, you'll see my tagline, fairy tales with a twist , in the header. But I don't just mean the traditional Cinderella , or Sleeping Beauty . I also love the classics, of which Wizard of Oz is one of them. In elementary school, we had the whole L. Frank Baum series in our library. And I read 'em. Boy, did I read them! And when the show would come on, once a year, it was a huge event in our house. Popcorn and pjs, sleeping bags on the floor in front of the tv, and staying up late. I was terrified of Elmira Gulch (who, sad to say, had more than a striking resemblance to my late music teacher who came to my house every Wednesday night for organ lessons), loved Glinda the Good Witch's dress, wished I was one of the ballerinas, and wanted a Toto all of my own. (Later got him, by way of a miniature poodle that Mom insisted we name Jamie. But he was THE best dog!) And...

Oooh, Pretty!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words; I figure this one is worth at least half a million, by the time edits were done :) A couple of ARCs for Catch of a Lifetime arrived last week for the conference I'm headed to at the end of the month and I had to get this picture of all three of my books. Sincere, grateful thanks once more to Anne Cain for the beautiful covers. Anne introduced herself to Cheryl and I at National. She does both of our covers and, wow, does she do a good job. I can't wait to see what she comes up with for the genies! The bottle is, obviously, for my genie series. Hubs and I found it on eBay and now I'm the proud owner of an I Dream of Jeannie purple replica. The little gal is a Wombat named Wicca, in honor of my online friends, the Writing Wombats (whom you will see mentioned in the Acknowledgments of all 3 books). I also have a small statue of Bastet (or Bast), the Egyptian cat goddess, and an amethyst-colored crystal ball not in the picture ...

Strange, Non-Waterfowl Day Wishes from Chumley Masticar

Hello, everyone! Chumley Masticar here again! I thought I’d pop back in for a bit since my author is In Over Her Head , heavily at work on Rod’s story edits and Angel’s story creation—not to mention getting that strange, non-waterfowl ready for the big day tomorrow. Thank the gods you Humans go for the winged type for your celebrates. I’ll tell you, those Italians and their Feast of the Seven Fishes have the Undersea World in an uproar every December. But at least in November we can rest somewhat easily—although I did hear of one instance where someone actually brought salmon to a turkey dinner. Can you imagine? How un-American! (Though the salmon was from Alaska, not somewhere out in the Wild Blue Under , so perhaps that counts? And, no, Sarah Palin was not the culprit!) Sadly, too, the salmon was not the guest... I don’t know. You all have such strange holidays. Crushed cocoa beans mixed with sugar cane that you pass out in plastic wrappers at night, in the dark, in the cold? I don...
