Pleased to Meet You—with a Giveaway

Hi, everyone! This is my first post on the Casablanca Authors blog, and I’m so glad to be in the company of these writers. My first Sourcebooks historical romance, IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE, will be published on September 3, 2013—and with more books to come after that, I hope to get to know all the lovely readers and writers on this blog much better over time.

So it’s only polite that I introduce myself first, right? Here are a few essential facts about me:

1. Pay no attention to that author photo in the sidebar. Here’s what I REALLY look like.

I drew that myself, and I think it's a pretty good likeness. Unless you ask my young daughter (known online as Little Miss R). Here’s what SHE thinks I look like.

At least she sees me as joyful, right?

2. I’m left-handed. My husband (known online as Mr. R) is what you might call a northpaw. I tend to notice whenever people in movies and TV shows are left-handed. He tends to be uninterested in this information.

3. Old movies fascinate me. Not just classics from Hollywood’s golden age, but even older films from the silent era. If I ever write an Edwardian romance, surely all of that old-movie-watching will come in handy as research!

4. Before I became a romance writer, I racked up degrees in psychology, English, and history. I worked in libraries and academic medicine for a while, but writing what I love to read—historical romance—is the best job I’ve ever had.

5. Besides reading romance, I’m a big fan of narrative nonfiction. Really, anything that will make me say, “That sounds interesting.” And a lot of things make me say that. J Books about art forgery? Baseball card collecting? The history of salt? Bring it on. (Mr. R likes all this too, so you might not be surprised to learn that our first date featured a trivia game.)

And a bonus fact…

6. I’m not a big gifts person…except for books. I love to get books as presents; I love to hear which books my friends are enjoying so I can snap those up. And I love to give away books, too.

So.

I’ve hoarded an advance copy of IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE, and I want to give it away to one of you! To be entered, just leave a comment telling me something about yourself. A talent you have, a favorite movie, your favorite dessert…it’s all good.

International entrants are welcome. From all comments, I’ll choose one winner at random at noon ET on Thursday, June 11. I’ll post the winner’s name as a comment on this post too, so please check back.

Thanks for joining me today! I’m so pleased to meet you all.

IT TAKES TWO TO TANGLE

WOOING THE WRONG WOMAN…
Henry Middlebrook is back from fighting Napoleon, ready to re-enter London society where he left it. Wounded and battle weary, he decides that the right wife is all he needs. Selecting the most desirable lady in the ton, Henry turns to her best friend and companion to help him with his suit…
IS A TERRIBLE MISTAKE…
Young and beautiful, war widow Frances Whittier is no stranger to social intrigue. She finds Henry Middlebrook courageous and manly, unlike the foppish aristocrats she is used to, and is inspired to exercise her considerable wit on his behalf. But she may be too clever for her own good, and Frances discovers that she has set in motion a complicated train of events that’s only going to break her own heart…

  3. Hey, Theresa! Glad to see you on Casablanca. Love your cover and your book sounds like fun. Are you coming to RWA?
I was known as the bear lady (make award-winning teddy bears, though related to Lady Godiva, supposedly, and that was another bare lady), and now I'm the wolf lady. What can I say??? It's in the genes.

  4. I like silent mvies as well. One of my treasured memories was seeing Lon Chaney's Phantom of the Opera in a theater accompanied by Gaylord Carter on the Theater Organ.

  5. Welcome! You draw very well. I'm impressed. I love to sing! Can't wait for September!

  6. Hi Theresa! Something about me would be that I have a book collection that includes 400 real books and 300 ebooks on my kindle! I love to read and I can honestly read a book in a day.

  7. Hi Theresa! There's nothing I like more that reading what all you amazing historical romance writers write.

I'm a very average person with no special talent or accomplishments. I can wiggle my ears. Does this count?!

  8. Hi Theresa
Your book cover is beautiful and looking forward to read your book. I adore Regency-Victorian stories.
Since, I am a book Lover and love making jewelry as a hobby, I combine the two and decided to create some bookmarks mad of ribbons and beads. I love to share them with my friends who love reading! Thank you for your giveaway, if I win, in exchange, I will write a review. Merci

  13. Hi Theresa,
I love historical romance. I'm a "Gone with the wind" freak.
I've read the book several times now, and watch the movie I don't know how many times? And I always cry!

  14. I love your blog entries!

The most delightfully random factoid I can tell you about myself is that I have been on a television documentary in Romania. (Never mind that I am not Romanian, nor have I ever been there, nor am I confident I could find Romania on a map). So there you have it. Looking forward to reading this book!! :)

  15. MORNING, LOOKING FORWARD TO READING YOUR NOVEL AND I DO LOVE THE COVER...DO YOU TANGO?...I AM AVID READER OF HISTORICAL ROMANCE AND IT'S GENRES, A LATE BLOOMER SORRY TO SAY, I BEEN READING FOR ABOUT 3.5 YEARS, SO, I AM TRYING TO CATCH UP AND READ AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!

  16. Hi, everyone! Thanks so much for stopping by today. It's great fun to read what you're telling me about yourselves! I'll respond to comments in little batches so I don't miss anyone. :)

  17. Ada, green is Mr. R's favorite color too. Good choice. :) My own favorite is gray, which I've been told isn't very interesting. But hey, it's a peaceful color.

Anita, nice! What's your favorite kind of music to sing and play?

Hi, Terry! As a bear lady, a descendant of a bare lady, and a wolf lady, you must be the one to talk to at parties. I would absolutely love to chat with you. I won't be at RWA this year, but I'm crossing my fingers for 2014!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow, I'm left-handed too Theresa but I also know how to write using my right hand. And I may only weigh 45 kg., but I eat a lot! I have a huge appetite. So I hope those interesting enough. :)

  19. Hi Theresa-

Another new to me author- how exciting. I'm very boring and looking for a job.

    Thanks!!

  20. Love your books Theresa! and I'm a tremendous fan of old movies. I'm still hoping somewhere down theline maybe you'll write the great redemption book for the Marquess of Lockwood. :)

  21. Virginia--that sounds wonderful. It's a whole different experience seeing a silent movie like that, isn't it? I saw the Chaney Phantom with organist and vocalists (for the Faust scenes) and was blown away. Amazing.

Shana, ha! I suspect that you're teasing me about my drawing gifts. :) What do you like to sing? Looking forward to September too, dear release-day compatriot!

Melissa, your TBR awes me, as does your reading speed! Do you feel like you can keep up with all the things you want to read? I always feel behind; there are more great-looking stories than time to read them.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Linda, many thanks for reading historical romance. :) And absolutely, wiggling your ears counts! I just read that only 30% of the population can do that. (There's my love of trivia again.) Enjoy your gift and astound your friends with it.

Nicole, those bookmarks sound so pretty. What a great gift for reader friends. Do you have any pictures you could link to?

Regencygirl01--isn't it a lovely cover? I think the red is just stunning. The Sourcebooks art department did beautiful work.

  23. Hi, May! Ooh, you're right--that's a fun movie. I love watching a hero get befuddled by a heroine who's more than a match for him. Ball of Fire is another great Stanwyck comedy; have you seen that one?

Jennifer, thanks so much for finding me! *left-handed fist bump*

girlygirlhoosier52--what a cool event! I've never heard of a better way to spend a Halloween. Do you know what this year's movie will be?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Julie, YES. I first read GWTW when I was about 12, and I can't even count how many times I've read it/watched the movie since. Don't you just want to shake Scarlett and Rhett? "Talk to each other! You're so close to that HEA!" It's wrenching.

Amanda, how did you luck into appearing in a Romanian documentary? It sounds like there's quite a story there. :)

Juanita, I do not know how to tango, but my brother recently taught me some swing dance steps! So glad you discovered historical romance. You'll never run out of great stories.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Lory, that must be fun to be ambidextrous. About the only thing I can do with my right hand is use scissors (ok, and type). And you're making me hungry with your food talk. :) What are your favorite foods?

Sheila, best of luck with the job hunt. Thanks for stopping by today!

Hi, Nancy--thanks so much! That Lockwood would indeed need a lot of redemption. HIs story's not in the works right now, but I'll never say never--who knows what stories the future holds?

  26. Hi Theresa! Thanks for such a cool post. Hmmm...nothing really exceptional about me. I have an eclectic variety of favorite everythings...like you, I love a wide variety of reading materials, movies (action/sci-fi/romance/horror/drama), tv, and music (country, rock, metal, Celtic folk, classical). Needless to say, my house is a pig-pen with all those interests. Not a leftie, but I have a southpaw 7 yr old son who wakes up at the crack of dawn to watch the financial stock reports on tv while drinking a cup of coffee (yes, he's only 7, but I swear he's 37). He sends you a southpaw fist bump.

  27. Hi Theresa

I love to read all types of romances. I used to read historicals years ago and then moved away from them - then last year I found some amazing authors and "came back" - I love that I have so many back issues and future ones read.

Something about me - I love to golf but am not very good :)

    Thanks for the chance.

A little about me - I've been married 44 years, work with ferals/strays and currently have 5 inside and 4 outside and besides collecting and reading books, I enjoy games and am either called the crazy cat lady or the rules lady lol.

  30. Hi Theresa! I have this book on my TBR list on Goodreads and I can't wait to just read it when it's release. I have a favorite dessert that I love to drink during the summer because it is refreshing. It's call three color drink or nam vam in my langauge.

  31. I glommed right onto your comment about working in libraries as I am a reference librarian! I've only been reading historical romance since November 2011 but have been a Jane Austen fan for over 20 years. Thanks for the giveaway chance.

  32. Like you, I enjoy classic movies. Some favorites are Gone With the Wind, On the Waterfront and Love with a Proper Stranger.

  36. Sandra, your son is a coffee fan and news follower at age 7? That's amazing! Leftie fist bump right back at him. Your house sounds like a great place to find something fascinating to do/read/listen to/see in every room.

pamerd, golf is unbelievably difficult. I salute you for enjoying it even if (as you say) you're not very good. What's your favorite thing about it? Hope you get to play soon and that you find lots of great historical romances to read.

Shawn, thanks so much! Very kind of you. Sorry about being acronym-dull; where is mbsbfc?

    ReplyDelete
  37. Catslady, hi! Thanks for your work with strays. My dearest pet ever was an adopted stray cat. Unfortunately Mr. R is allergic to most animals, so we're petless now. You mentioned you enjoy games; what sort do you like best? Are you a trivia fan too?

Sandy, thanks for finding my book on Goodreads! I looked up the drink you mentioned; oh, YUM. Enjoy it and stay cool and refreshed this summer!

Maria, kudos--librarians are awesome. When I worked as a library clerk, I liked seeing what was circulating and found lots of new books to love that way. In fact, that's when I started reading historical romance. Someone returned a Julia Quinn book, I snapped it up, and that was that. :)

  38. Kim, nice to meet another classic-movie fan! I'm trying to get my daughter interested in older movies now that she's old enough to follow a plot. So far she's enjoyed Mary Poppins, but I haven't convinced her to watch silents yet.

LSUreader, such classics. Hope you get a chance to settle in with a great movie soon. Thank you for stopping by!

Vanessa, hey! *hug* You're so sweet to stop by. Isn't that a fantastic cover? I've been blessed by the art department. As are your books--love those Renegade Royals covers!

  40. Hello Theresa! Welcome to Casablanca! Nice little facts you told us about here. You sound like a humorous person, I am going to assume your books will also be as fun to read! I've seen a silent movie in school for my English back in HS, it was very interesting. Not what I'd think of for a movie night, but its something charming about the silent acting.

Anyway, I have postings online (as a reviewer) and I go by, x0unerthanlater on Goodreads. I also love receiving books as gifts, and wish people would like them as much as I do so it wouldn't be so hard looking for a gift for THEM. *giggles* Welps, glad you joined us. Looking forward to hearing more about you! (and your books!)

  42. Hi Theresa, happy to see you here.

One thing you may not know about me is that I have a Pocket Dragon collection. I picked my first three up in London, back in the late 1980's. Not a huge hoard by any means, but enough to keep the dragon in me happy.

I am looking forward to your new series.

  43. Hi, Victoria--rock on! My brother and father play the guitar too. It's fun to listen.

Jpeezy, thanks for finding my post! I think I'm pretty hilarious, though my family doesn't always agree. ;) Isn't it great giving books as gifts? I wish everyone liked that too.

bn100, those are good any time of day, for any reason.

Gayle, hi there! I didn't know about your collection; how cool that it began in England. My next Sourcebooks hero is named Wyverne, which is sort of like a dragon that bought an extra vowel. You're so kind; I hope you enjoy the new series.

  45. Hi Theresa, nice to see you here on the Casablanca Authors Blog. :D Love your pictures, especially your daughter's - I'm sure it looks just like you.
I'll choose to talk about my favorite dessert - it's pumpkin pie with whipped cream. Since I was born in the fall, I have it every year for my birthday instead of cake, and of course during the holidays too.

  46. Hi Theresa, nice getting to know you a little bit on this blog! Looking forward to more from you in the future!

As for a little something about myself, I enjoy reading all sub-genres of romance but what I'm reading really depends on my mood at the time ;)

  47. Hi Theresa! Great post and I loved the artwork, both by you and your daughter. I don't have a talent or anything like that. I do have a hobby that I love and that is reading. I will read constantly and beg everyone to give me Amazon gift cards so I can keep filling up my Kindle. Thanks for the chance to win your book.

  48. Barbara, ha! She was pretty proud of her artwork. The eyes, especially. I'm not sure what to think about that. Love your birthday dessert tradition--yum! Do you have a favorite go-to recipe?

Winnie, so true. There's a different book for every mood, isn't there? What are you reading now?

Sheryl, thanks for stopping by. Great hobby! You should snitch the card in my post for the next time you have a birthday. :)

  52. Martha, I'll take a slice of each! Yum. Pecan pie is my favorite of all.

Pamela, very true. In this book, one woman holds the promise of the hero's return to society--but she's not the one he falls for. I hope you enjoy the story!

Brooklyn, hi! I have been saving "Bite Me, Your Grace" to read once my deadline is past, but I sneaked the first chapter already and loved it.
