I love to take photos! I take them of everything! Flowers and animals, insects, and landscapes, buildings and even sometimes people. They can be beautiful just the way they are. But sometimes, they're even more fun when they have a little bit of Photoshop magic applied. I used to plant tons of trees, when I had a lot of acreage–I love forests. But I was so disappointed to learn the people who bought my home in Oklahoma clearcut most of the trees. Beautiful pines, helped to stop erosion on the hillside, and they provided homes for birds, beauty, solitude. There’s no prettier sound than wind blowing through a forest and hearing the rustle of branches or pine needles. We have old forest in and around our neighborhood. Most new home developments, they just clearcut the trees, leaving barren land. But here, I have several old pines. And behind me, one of my neighbors has beautiful oaks. He wants to cut them down. Why? Because they drop leaves and twigs and he has to pick them up. Really? He has to cut the grass too!  Maybe he should dig it up? In Texas heat, shade trees are at a premium. They’re beautiful. You see them towering a hundred feet above the homes. Why would you want to cut them down??? I had to have one of the pine trees ...

Yep, squished on my lap, looking over my keyboard, my puppies watch me take pictures, but really, as you can see here, I was typing away on my next story. Tanner, the black and tan Havanese, had to peer over my laptop, and I had to take a picture. Max, the white Havanese, has to get as close to me as he can. Getting ready for St. Patrick's Day--may the luck of the Irish be with you! Making bears, need to make another.  And playing around with Photoshop's oil paint versions of the puppies. And gardening! Well, this is a weed. But isn't it pretty? And this is a Sweet Sixteen Gerbera Daisy. Isn't it pretty? And garlic chives, so yummy on baked or boiled potatoes! Female Bluebird on a sunny day. Mourning Dove on a rainy day--Raindrops keep falling on my head... In writing and photography, setting can mean everything. Just think if the dove had been in front of a bunch of shrubs. The raindrops falling on his head would have been lost. The bluebird against the blue sky made for a nice backdrop. In writing, I try to have a setting that challenges my characters, or gives the reader a new experience. I’m in the Boundary Waters on a canoe trip right now while writing the next Arctic Wolf book due out next year. It’s different from being in Alaska, where the story starts, the Grand Cayman Islands, where I've visited or say …Texas, where I live now. Shooting pictures on a rainy day gives a different setting than on a sunny day. The same with a story. It sets the mood. A rainy, foggy day makes you feel different from a sunny, bright day.
