The Great Estate

Sometimes, I like to dream I'm the custodian of a grand house like Downton Abbey or Thornbrook Park. Hiring servants would be my duty, a contribution to the local economy. Butler, Housekeeper, Gardener, Cook, Driver, Maids... Not that I need any of these things, like Downton's Cousin Matthew. Oh no, let me fend on my own! Ah, but very well... if you insist. Maybe just a valet or Lady's maid. Must keep up appearances and do my part.  Right now, I'm home from vacation and my house is a mess. If I had to choose just one, I would love a maid to handle my vacation laundry and put everything back in its place. How about you? Cook? Butler? Driver? Maid? Someone to tend your garden? Someone who looks like this... Oh dear, is he taking another break? You simply must keep after the help around here. :) To celebrate the launch of the Great Estate, I'll be giving away prizes at my Facebook page today . If you comment here, I'll consider you entered there, but I wo...

Adventures in Cooking

I love cooking shows! Chopped is my favorite. Four chefs are presented with four weird ingredients per basket and somehow have to make the ingredients all work together through three rounds including (usually) appetizer, entree, and dessert. If you're the chef who fails to make a harmonious dish, you will hear host Ted say "You've been chopped!" Four goes to three goes to two, and one winner emerges. Fun! I've always liked trying new foods, no matter how weird or different.  I guess it all started when I was a little kid and my grandfather would take me out to dinner to distract me when my older sister got cool party invitations that did not include tagalong me. I would order foods that would astound the grown-ups in my midst. I lived to hear "How old are you, honey? Are you sure you want escargot?" Yes, very...

Heroes: Early Inspirations

Some women love military men. Others go for the sports heroes. I've always been partial to poets and musicians. My first crushes were on pop stars. David Cassidy, Simon Le Bon. Later on, I fell for dead poets. Shelley, Byron. Apparently, I took the idea of unrequited love a little too far. But when I think of the men who have inspired me most romantically, I think of men who appreciate beauty and sadness, love, and art. Brooders. It's no surprise that I still have trouble creating really strong alpha heroes. Alpha men just aren't my thing. But lots of romance readers love a good Alpha hero, so I keep trying my best. In Thornbrook Park, I introduced the Thorne brothers, Gabriel and Marcus. Marcus, the younger brother, was a poet in the body of a prizefighter. He took on physical challenges to impress his father and brother, but he always preferred settling down with a good book. I tried to make him into a strong Alpha male, but readers, and Eve Kendal, saw him ...
