Unforgettable Characters

We've all met a few of them along the way: those characters who live on in our thoughts long after the story has ended, prompting us to wonder, however irrationally, what happened to them. As a reader, I've encountered a number, and going back to read their tales is like meeting up with old friends. For instance, I'm re-reading Stephen King's masterpiece The Stand right now, a book I've revisited every couple of years since discovering it in the sixth grade. His particular gift as an author, and one that has always inspired me, is to create characters who leap off the page and truly breathe. I have wondered about the eventual fates of Frannie, Stu Redman, and Tom Cullen for a long time, wishing I could check in on them. There's no way to know, of course. Stephen King himself probably doesn't even know. So I re-read their story and try to content myself with revisiting the places I, and they, have already been. And "Don't Fear the Reaper...

The Benefits of Dreaming Big

Amazing. Just a couple of years ago, I would never have believed that I'd be in this picture. And yet there I was on Saturday, signing my books alongside the lovely Marie Force and Robin Kaye at the B&N in Baltimore's inner harbor (and by the way, Robin and Marie, you guys are SO much fun, and I'm so glad I got to hang out with you!). It was a little slow, since it was windy and freezing outside (and eventually, snowing), but I don't think I could ever be bored in company like that. If ever there were two women born to write witty contemporary romance, it's Marie and Robin. The laughter kept me warm. Which is good, since we were seated very near the front doors. That's me on the right, with the big smile and the frozen cleavage, shortly before I mooched Robin's scarf. Casa Babes rock even more in person. DC is going to be a blast this year! But anyway, as I sat there on Saturday, sampling our buffet of Hershey's kisses and dishing about every...

Unruly Characters

People don't generally believe me when I tell them that my characters have minds of their own. I mean, okay, I know that TECHNICALLY they did come out of my head. I'm not completely nutty. But getting to know a character, particularly just as you're beginning a story, can be an interesting experience. Especially if they don't want to be what you want them to be. Think this is impossible? Oh no. No it is not. And a character can make you utterly miserable until you get him or her right. An example? In my book Dark Highland Fire, my heroine, Rowan, starts out as a stripper at a sleazy joint in Reno. She and I had no issues about also her also being an otherworldly, blood-drinking demigoddess: apparently, that worked for everyone. But the stripper thing, well...honestly, I was not at all sure about it. I tried to make her a more vulnerable refugee without a job. I tried to compromise and make her a bartender at the sleazy strip joint. I tried to work it so she didn't a...

Clearing Out the Cobwebs

I know the pin-ups are usually Danielle's domain, but there's no way on Earth I can find anything to compete with Cheryl's eye candy yesterday...and anyway, I enjoy pretending I look like this while I'm dreaming up my next story. Gotta love the myth of the romance writer, with our feather boas and elaborately decorated boudoirs. Oh, and our libidinous cabana boys who all look something like Cheryl's hottie:-) Anyway, the french maid is an appropriate symbol for my current state of mind at present. I've sent off my copyedits for Wild Highland Magic, which will be the third book in my Highland Werewolves series, I've pretty well wrapped up my promotional guest blogs for Dark Highland Fire, I've gotten some sleep, read and watched movies, bought unnecessary (and very fun) stuff, gotten settled in a new house in a new state, and am even making beds again. All of which can only mean one thing: Yep, it's time to start writing again. It has never cease...

Small Wonders

It's been an interesting few weeks for me. I've been across the country and back, lived in a couple different houses, driven up and down the Eastern Seaboard (not for fun, sadly), uprooted the kids, and now, finally, have gotten my husband and myself and the kids and pets all in one place, in one state, and am settling in. It's not perfect yet, but with every box unpacked, every beloved knicknack placed, I can feel myself relaxing. Getting comfy. Every laugh from the kids, every precious item appearing in a place that it will come to inhabit, is a small wonder for me, letting me know we're headed the right way. That everything is going to be just fine. It's been like that with writing, at least for me. My path to publication, in the great scheme of things, was pretty fast. So there's been a lot of learning along the way for me, and with the rush of three books in two years, it's taken some time for me to start settling in. You know...to get comfy. T...

Dark Highland Fire - Launch Week excerpt!

Since it's Launch Week here, I thought I'd offer up one of my favorite scenes from early on in Gabriel and Rowan's relationship in Dark Highland Fire (I know this is one of Terra's favorite bits from the book as well...excellent taste, Terra!). I always tell people that the sparks started to fly between these two characters from the moment they laid eyes on one another. And in this scene, where Gabriel is trying to see an irritated and newly-arrived Rowan to her room, there were plenty of those sparks in evidence. Hope you enjoy, and have a great weekend! * * * “Do you always do that?” Gabriel started, the soft and smoky voice beside him jerking him back to the present. After a silent walk back across the grounds to the Iargail House, with Rowan trudging along beside him with a ferocious look that quite eloquently said don’t even think about talking to me , he’d been free to let his mind wander in peace. And so it had; up long and shapely legs, under a par...

Vampire Strippers Save the Day

Talk about good timing. I was just begining to recover from finishing up some fairly extensive edits at the end of this past week (like, "my brain currently has all the retentive ability of swiss cheese" extensive) when a wonderful email showed up from Ms. Danielle. Contained within was an absolutely awesome review for my upcoming release, Dark Highland Fire, and it said all the things I would want someone to say about the book after reading it...which is to say that the piece in its entirety inspired a shuffling, semi-zombiefied happy dance from She Who Stays Up Too Late Working (aka ME). Kinda like being a Thriller extra, but happier. And I can't moonwalk. But anyway, I think that one of the best compliments was that the reviewer really enjoyed my heroine being "a little bit different." It was something I had been just a little bit worried about. After all, there aren't that many books where the heroine is a blood-drinking stripper. So why did I ma...

Bruno, Sitting In For Kendra

Hey, human playthings. What's up? I'm Bruno, and I'll be your guest blogger for today. Yeah, that's me in the picture. Don't hate me because I'm beautiful, okay? It takes long hours of relaxation to get a belly like mine. I know, I know. You wanna touch it, right? Everyone does. Lucky you, I'm into belly rubs. No poking, though. I still have my claws. The pet human chose wisely and let me keep those. Unlike some other things that I'd rather not talk about. So normally I don't blog, being that cat humor is a little too refined for you human types. Well, and also that my claws stick in the keyboard. But I took mercy on my pet, because she's starting to look a little rough these days, muttering about something called a deadline and writing in her pajamas all day. I mean, the leopard print pajamas show very good taste, don't get me wrong, but I really need her in top condition to feed me and rub my belly and hang out with me and, ...
