What Comes Next? by Gina Conkle

Aiden Turner is Poldark
A friend of mine recently pointed out a trend toward historical shows on television. Downton Abbey might be winding down, but Outlander is as popular as ever...so is BBC's Poldark.

But don't despair, the entertainment industry is looking beyond UK set shows.

Seth Numrich plays colonial military officer and spy, Ben Tallmadge

AMC will continue next spring with their colonial spy ring saga, Turn. The same network gives a nod to the old west with Hell on Wheels. Then there's History Channel's Vikings for some Dark Ages drama. FX offers viewers a grim take on the Middle Ages with The Bastard Executioner (calling all Game of Thrones fans, minus the fantasy).

Maisie Richardson-Sellers plays Michal

ABC's going further back in time with its midseason edition Of Kings & Prophets, a take on Israel's first monarch, King Saul as he falls from grace and the subsequent rise of King David.

Adelaide Kane plays the youthful Mary, Queen of Scots

If that's too far back in time for your royals, don't despair. The CW network presents Reign, a show about a teen monarch from Scotland moving to France to formalize her arranged marriage to a prince.

Can you feel television's love for YA? With a dash of romance? Maybe we're getting away from dystopian teen drama and sticking with old fashioned historical angst?

There's still plenty of crime and hospital dramas in the line-up along with situation comedies.

But, could it be there's a love surge for all things historical? Dare I say historical romance?

Books, movies, and TV change like trends in fashion. All these historical settings make me wonder: If viewers yearn for the old days on the small screen, maybe they'll want this in their books as well?

What do you think? Is there a surge ahead for historical romance? If so, what sub-genre do you most want to read? Give me your 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices and I'll share mine!

Hi! I'm Gina Conkle writer of Viking and Georgian romance with a softly sensual side. I love history, books, and romance…the perfect recipe for historical romance writer. When it comes to history, my mantra is ---the older and moldier the better--- means interesting family vacations. Good thing my husband and two sons share similar passions. When not visiting fascinating places, I can be found delving into the latest adventures in cooking, gardening, and chauffeuring my almost grown sons.

  1. I have a triple shared first place for:
    *Victorian Romance
    *Regency Romance
    *Georgian Romance
But honestly, give me a hot alpha male and a spunky heroine that are masters of the verbal sparing and I'll read any time period, any genre. :-)

  2. And for the fall TV lineup, I'm super excited about Masterpiece's new drama Indian Summer. It takes place in 1932, so it's a bit newer than some of our other favorite historical British shows. :-)
