Romantic Settings

I wanted to speculate today about all the places I want to travel, and whether or not I might set a romance novel there.

Mont St. Michel is a very romantic place, as long as you don't get trapped by the tide. On the border between Brittany and Normandy, this beautiful old city was once the home of monks. Maybe I could set a medieval romance there. With Napoleon tearing up the Continent during the Regency period, I don't think any of my Highland Waters clan will wander down there. Of course, you never know... Characters have a way of surprising you. They are the ultimate boss. I'm just along for the ride. And a fun ride it is.

I have been to Paris and much of it is truly beautiful. Home to so much tragedy and politics, it would be dynamic but I am not sure it would be a good setting for a comedy. I might leave French comedy to Moliere.

I have set two of my romances in Shropshire. Close to Wales with gentle hills and beautiful farms, that county is a lovely place for falling in love.

My latest romance is set in London, and my handsome Scot and sweet English girl fall in love while viewing the old lion in the Tower. It takes them a bit longer to get together...the Highlander takes a while to woo his lady, but everything comes out happy in the end. That is why I love romance.  As much as I love setting my stories in beautiful places, I also love happy endings.

Ever since Christy English picked up a fake sword in stage combat class at the age of fourteen, she has lived vicariously through the sword-wielding women of her imagination. Sometimes an actor, always a storyteller, Christy works happily with Sourcebooks Casablanca to bring the knife-throwing women of her novels to life. A banker by day and a writer by night, she loves to eat chocolate, drink too many soft drinks, and walk the mountain trails of her home in western North Carolina.

  1. All of those settings are so lovely! I like Mont St Michel. If the couple was trapped by the tide, that might work out well...
