Hope Springs Eternal

Someone mentioned this month's theme is Spring flowers. I was kind of daunted by this, because I have a notoriously black thumb. I can't even keep a cactus or a bamboo shoot alive--and I've been told those are the easiest plants to care for.

My grandmother passed away almost three years ago. Unlike me or my mother, she was known for her green thumb. Over the years, she has been known to resurrect many a plant from an untimely demise. One of the floral arrangements given to me by my employer was a peace lily. Despite the fact that many a plant has come and gone since, this plant thrives. It's leaves remain green and full of life. We've since decided that this is my grandmother's way of letting us know that she is still here, watching over us.

Even more fascinating, I just noticed that the plant has started to bloom again--the week before Easter of all the days. It was comforting. Knowing my grandmother is here keeping watch over us helps ease the tension and stresses that life sometimes brings our way.

Pardon the fuzzy picture. On top of my black thumb, I'm not much of a photographer.

  1. Sid, I also have a black thumb. My sole contribution to our summer vegetable garden is dropping seeds in the shallow planting trough that Mark digs for me.

The only plant I've ever kept alive more than a month was an aloe vera plant back when I was in college - but it was more medicine than plant. I used aloe on my hand rips from uneven parallel bars.

  2. I used to have a green thumb, but that was BC (Before Children). Once my girls came along, my plants took a sadly neglected back seat. Now my dogs command my attention, but I have managed to keep a peace lily alive for 3 1/2 years (a personal record!). Since I'm a condo dweller, that's my only green growing thing until the risk of a late frost is gone and I get a hibiscus to live on my bisto table out on the veranda.

But how sweet that you can remember your grandmother for her knack with plants!

  3. I have a green thumb most of the time, except when it comes to the summer droughts and water restrictions. Next weekend I want to plant another tree for Earth Day!

  4. I have an intermittently green thumb (-:

It's tough in the high desert but I have discovered that my MIL's house in L.A. has the perfect room for African violets and I have turned one of her tables into my propagation center. One thing I have noticed is that all of the houseplants REALLY like to be fed every so often! One can see the increased leaf size after feeding!
