The Four Leaf Clover

There are approximately 10,000 3 leaf clovers for every one 4 leaf clover according to Wikipedia. Imagine having the time to hunt through a patch of clover looking for one...

I did as a child, and I found one.

For many years it was pinned to the noticeboard my mother kept next to the phone in the kitchen, commandeered for communal luck. As a kid that really bugged me as I considered it mine, now I realize the luck is in the finding not the keeping.

Did the 4 leaf clover bless me with a luck-filled life?
Well, that depends on what you consider luck. No, I haven’t won lotto and it didn’t stop bad things from happening. However I’ve always come out the other side relatively unscathed (even if I didn’t feel lucky at the time in hindsight things could’ve been worse).
So while I do believe in luck, I also believe in hard work, taking chances and grabbing every opportunity that comes along.
If you leave a comment, I have a signed ARC of Kiss of the Goblin Prince up for grabs. Winner drawn at random on Tuesday 13th.

Trapped for centuries in the bleak Shadowlands, Dai clings to his humanity with a thirst for knowledge. But now he's free of the goblin curse, and some would say he knows too much- he can make nature bend to his will, influence the minds of others, and command magic. Yet love eludes him. Then he meets Amanda, a single mother with a sick daughter whom he feels compelled to protect. But could she possibly place her trust in the kiss of a goblin prince?

"Darkly Celtic, richly imagined, this is paranormal romance at its best." -

  1. Oh, Shona, FF&P members were winning your book all over the place, but did I have any luck? Nope! Although, I might have had. I had a winning ticket, but didn't find it until it was too late. :( So luck is all relevant. I was lucky enough to have the winning ticket, and unlucky enough not to find it in time. Although I did win Cheryl's book! Ironically, I paid for $20 worth of tickets for the auction baskets and didn't win, but on the two free door prizes, I would have. That's what I call luck!

  2. I am grateful to four leaf clovers not for the luck they provide, but for the occasional break they afforded from more vigorous play as a child. There we'd be, repelling boarders from our ships (maple trees) or looking for our lost parents in the enchanted realm (ye olde woods), when somebody would start a hunt for four leaf clovers.

Down we'd all go, sorting through the grass, and it was always a good time to talk among ourselves. I can't recall finding one, but I can recall the pleasure of the hunt.

  3. Hi, Shona! May you always find a four-leaf clover when you least expect it and need it the most! "Kiss of the Goblin Prince" sounds terrific--very intriguing story line!

I have come to believe that our “fate or luck” is determined by our choices. Once we make a choice, the fate that was predetermined by that choice will then follow through. However, I strongly believe in true love and one and only soul mates. Once that true love is embedded in your heart, it is there to stay. No matter how you try to deny it, or work around it, it is immovable. Your soulmate is worth a lifetime wait : )

  4. Thomas Jefferson said, "I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it."

I have to admit I always loved Professor McGonagall's declaration when the dynamic trio take down the troll. "Five points each to Gryffindor... for sheer dumb luck!"

    May your luck continue. :-)

  5. I've never found a four-leaf clover. I probably don't have the patience to look for one. I never seem to win any contests, but that's okay. I'm lucky in other ways.

  6. Great post, Shona. I was really little when I found the first four-leafed clover, and can't remember what I did with it.

The second time I was older, and remember wrapping it in plastic and putting it in my wallet. I had it for the longest time.

Thanks for making me smile this morning. :)

  7. I am with you in your view of luck. However, the search for 4 leaf clovers is great fun and like you, my son found one some years back. He pressed it dry then said, these wouldn't be very hard to make. Then he began pressin normal 3 leaf clovers but adding an extra leaf. I believe he gave them away to friends as a design on bookmarks. Said friends were highly amused and were in on the secret. Of course, the saying on the bookmard was, 'You can make your own luck.'

  14. Terry,
I never win door prizes or raffles, but because the proceeds usually go to a good cause I buy a ticket anyway (plus you have to be in it to win it and one day I might get lucky)

  16. Hi Virginia,
I’ve never found another one, but maybe I don’t need it. I think we do make our own luck through our choices.

I’ve had some dumb luck in my life, some close call luck and the kind that comes with hard work.

  18. Hi Shana,
I wouldn’t have the patience to look for one now and I have no idea how long it took me to find that first one.

Exactly, if I hadn’t found that clover would my life have been different? I feel very lucky to be writing and selling my books. It’s a dream come true.

Maybe even believing in luck and feeling lucky is enough to attract more luck :)

  27. I had a lucky rabbit's foot when I was a kid. I always looked for a four leaf clover but never found one. I think personal talismans are fun. To me they are like Dumbo's feather. They give you the confidence to do something you are already capable of doing.

  28. When I was little I used to sit outside in the yard and search for four leaf clovers. We lived in the country and had a huge lawn that was overgrown with clover, so it was perfect to lay there and soak up the sun and listen to the birds. It helped that we had a mutant clover patch, I would usually find a four leaf clover if I sat long enough. I would keep them and press them in heavy books (my Dad's, shh don't tell) and then use them as book marks in my books. =) Maybe that is why I have loved reading so much, blessed by the clover?

  29. I remember back in elementary school I used to get on hands and knees during recess to look for a four leaf clover. I never did find one, so I cheated a few times and tour part of a three leaf to make four. Overall, I still have some relatively good luck.

  30. Congrats on the release! Sounds great!! Great message. I do believe in luck. But I also believe that we can make our own luck by working towards what we want to achieve.

  31. I believe in luck but I also believe that luck can run out if the effort isn't put forth. It's kind of like you can win the lottery but if you don't plan on its use wisely it can go down the drain :)
