I’m Thankful for Cover Artists

Who said goblins can't be hot!
I will never forget the first time I had to fill out a cover art form. I was both excited and terrified—what if I got it wrong somehow?

Like every author I had dreamed of that moment when I first saw my name on a cover, and I wanted that cover to be awesome, one that made the reader pick up the book. Because covers are the first thing the reader sees it has to be eye catching and convey a sense of the book. A cover has a lot of work to do.

But I had (and still have) no idea what makes a good cover, all I know is, I know what I like when I see it. Even after seven novellas and a couple of novels I still struggle when it comes to cover art descriptions.
I love this one :)

So this is heartfelt thank you to all the cover artists who have seen my notes and have come up with something that captures the book and is beautiful/hot/intriguing/enticing and awesome!

  1. I so agree, Shona! I love our cover artists. Readers fall in love with the covers before they even open the book. :) And your covers are beautiful. I've got to say I saw Labrynth, and the goblin king didn't look anything like your goblin hunk! :) And I play a lot of role-playing games, and goblins are not hero material! But yours are definitely hot!

  4. Gorgeous cover, as I love half naked men with tattoos, but I do have to ask: a goblin prince, something of the earth, why the (angel) wings?

  5. Hi Aurian,
They aren’t angel wings; they’re an echo of his past that has manifested as wings, and he has to shed them.

  9. People do judge books by their covers, and I often hear from readers how lovely my covers are. I do wonder though--are abs the new cleavage? Did we spend 3000 years objectifying women only to start objectifying men? If we did, is this entirely a bad thing?

I love the title, the premise AND the cover for "The Goblin King."

  10. Does anyone know if that is Mark Lawson, who plays Brody Lovett on "One Life to Live" on the cover? Because it sure does look like him. :)

  11. I just love my Sourcebooks covers. I think the artists really try to capture the essence of the book. They don't want something generic.

  15. On behalf of all of the artists and designers who have worked on your books, I can only say that it has been a pleasure.

While you may be nervous when you submit the cover information questionaire, I can say that there is some bit of nerves on our side as well in trying to give each of your books the "perfect" cover.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. We will pass them along to the artists and designers.
