Top Ten Falling in Love Quotes

The Top Ten

According to one source the top ten love quotes come from some folks that I never even heard of but when I read the quotes they became this romance writer's brand new friends.
See how many of them you recognize...
Number 10: "...See there's this place in me where your fingerprints still rest, your kisses still linger and your whispers softly echo. It's the place where a part of you will forever be a part of me." (Gretchen Kemp)
Doesn't that absolutely make you wish you'd used that for a hero to say to a heroine just before he drops down on one knee and pops open that little velvet box? If I can make my cowboys that sensitive and poetic along with their swagger, boots, drawl and Stetsons, why darlin' the readers will flock to the store to read about them.
Number 9: "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart." (Helen Keller)
I do believe that's why so many readers love romance. The books touch their hearts. They can feel what they are reading whether it's cowboys, shape shifters or mermen!
Number 8: "Two souls with but a single thought, two hearts that beat as one." (John Keats)
That's falling in love in a poetic nutshell. When we talk about the soul it transcends the norm and goes beyond into eternity. And two hearts that beat in total unison. Falling in love...gettting those souls to see past the flaws, over the speed bumps that life throws out there and into the clouds drifting across the sun as it sets. Two hearts to beat together forever...HEA!
Number 7: "It's so easy, To think about Love, To Talk about Love, To wish for Love, But it's not always easy, To recognize Love, Even when we hold it...In our hands." (Jaka)
This is where romance authors excell. We get to think about it, talk about it, wish our characters the best in finding it even when we put them on a shaky tree limb in a tornado and throw rocks at them. One of my favorite fan letters was from a lady who said that Wil Marshall, the cowboy in Red's Hot Cowboy, had raised the bar for any future relationships that she might have. Now that's wishin' for love, dear hearts!
Number 6: "Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own." (Robert Heinlein)
I think of the middle of the book here. It's the top of the arc where both parties are realizing that they aren't complete without the other and where the other person's happiness means even more than their own. They are going to fight the feelings but they are beginning to feel them down deep in their soul.
Number 5: "I love you, not only for what you are. But for what I am when I am with you." (Roy Croft)
This is one of my favorites! When my characters begin to see that that their soul mate is what is making them what they are, the battle is almost won and the HEA is in sight.
Number 4: "But to see her was to love her, love but her, and love her forever." (Robert Burns)
Ah, I think of Rye O'Donnell in Love Drunk Cowboy. He saw. He loved. It was forever. His was that instant moonstruck kind of love but then he had the heart rending job of making Austin feel the same way.
Number 3: "In dreams and in love there are no impossibilities." (Janos Arnay)
And in writing a romance there are no impossibilities. A hero pops into your head and you already have the heroine sitting on your shoulder. You know her and all her character flaws and strengths and there for the two of them to ever, ever fall in love is an absolute guaranteed impossibility. But even after interviews, not another single hero works...so you begin to write and the impossible becomes possible and then it becomes necessary and finally reality. Right?
Number 2: "In real love you want the other person's good. In romantic love you want the other person." (Margaret Anderson)
Oh, yeah!! And there's the sexual tension. I knew it had to be hiding up around number one. That attraction that makes us breathless, that creates that number 10 feeling and that number 8 condition. It's the glue that brings the romance together!
And drum roll...
Number 1: From Ingrid Bergman. "A kiss is a lovely trick, designed by nature, to stop words when speech becoms superfluous."
That first kiss... the heat, the sparks, the fireworks, the fire, the passion. Romance...falling in love...
If I reach that first kiss in a book, there's no supper, no clean laundry, no clean dishes, the tom cats don't even get fed until I finish the book.
And the last quote which was not listed in the top ten or even the top one hundred but definitely deserves recognition and a big merit button:
Romance is a concept dreamed up by some individual in a vain attempt to lend grace and dignity to an activity which, if entered into with the proper enthusiasm by the two people involved, is neither graceful nor dignified. (Husband who wore the cool T-shirt to the Sourcebook book signing at RWA in NYC this summer)
Tell me, what is your favorite love quote...for comments and quotes alike I'll put your name in a boot and draw tomorrow morning for a copy of Love Drunk Cowboy. Hopefully, you'll find a brand new quote in it that will be your brand new favorite.

  1. Hey, Carolyn : )

Love makes the world go around. It matters not whether it is the first blush of a new romance or the golden glow of a lifelong romance. It makes fools out of grown men, and it makes women who should know better act like school girls with their first crush. Love brings light to dark corners, sunshine to cloudy days, and a joyful heart when least expected. It gives hope when all hope was thought to be lost. People who love and are loved in return live longer, smile more often, and generally make the world a better place. If you are without your loved one, no matter what the reason, then I wish you peace in your remembrance--Virginia C

  4. "This thou perceivest, which makes thy love more strong, To love that well, which thou must leave ere long." (Shakespeare, Sonnet 73).

I don't know if I could choose an all time fave, but this one informs the entire novel up until the resolution of the big black moment, and probably all the decades of HEA that follow.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Terry,
Oh, yes, you can take that off your taxes. It's research and so is the popcorn and Coke and mileage! Surely, Mr. I.R.S. won't have a problem with that!

  12. Carolyn, love the quotes! There's a great line at the end of the movie The Firm from Jean Tripplehorn, but I can't remember it exactly and can't find it online.

The line showed how much Tom Cruise's wife still loved him even after all the crap he'd put her through. :)

    Happy Sunday!

  13. Tracey,
