So, I will be
100% honest—I drew a blank thinking of this blog. Yes, yes, I’ve fallen in love
and I’m very happy (and no, not engaged just yet, you nosy authors!), but this
topic was one that stumped me. So I did what any curious-minded person does—I
Googled it. And I found a great list of ways to know you are in love. And
wouldn’t you know it, this list made me think about how over the last few
years, I’ve totally and completely fallen head over heels in love with the
genre of romance!
Top Ten Ways to
Know You’re In Love (WITH A GOOD BOOK)
1. You’re in love if you think about them all of the
time.
- Yup, I’m constantly checking release dates of various authors I want to read, as well as pretty much thinking about Sourcebooks releases at all hours of the day
- Yup, I’m constantly checking release dates of various authors I want to read, as well as pretty much thinking about Sourcebooks releases at all hours of the day
2. You’re in love if everything reminds you of them.
- Remember in Lord of Scoundrels when Jessica shoots
Sebastian in the arm because he’s just that infuriating? Or in Pride and Prejudice, when Darcy
unsuspectingly insults Elizabeth without realizing she can hear him? Tell me
you’ve never been so annoyed you’re willing to go to great measures to make
that person shut up (perhaps not quite enough to want to shoot that person) or
if you’ve been in a very awkward situation, and not thought about how your
favorite characters would have reacted. Because I do it all the time!
3. You’re in love if you care more about their
safety and happiness than you do about your own.
- WHERE DID I
PUT THAT BOOK? Is it in my car? Did I leave it at work? I NEED TO FINISH IT
NOW. Luckily, now I have a Kindle, but I’ve gone on rampage –like searches for
books that have gone missing in the past (only to realize it’s slipped off my
beside table and is under the bed).
4. You’re in love if you start caring more about
your own appearance.
- Romance is
perhaps one of the best genres to judge books by their covers ;-)
- I love finding
out about authors—do they have a backlist or more books coming out soon? Where
can I find out more information? This is one of the BIGGEST reasons why I
stress authors need to have a website as their home base (even with Facebook
and twitter and blogs). Readers will want to find out MORE.
6. You’re in love if you want to impress them.
- Part of my job
is sending out books for review, and lord knows I love when the good ones roll
in! And it’s exciting to see those long praise pages in the beginnings of your
next books!
7. You’re in love if you aren’t as tight with your
money or time anymore.
- Let’s not talk
about how much money a month I spend on new books.
8. You’re in love if hanging out with your friends
just isn’t as appealing any more.
- Have I told my
friends that I’m just not feeling that great when in all actuality I’m in the
middle of a great story? YES. And I don’t feel that bad about it either.
9. You’re in love if commitment is actually starting
to sound like something you could stand.
- So, perhaps I
spent 4 years in college being trained to finish books (English major), but I
rarely leave a book unfinished. I feel like it’s a commitment to an author who
no matter what I might think about the book in the long run, spent a lot of
time and care working on a book they are proud of…
10. You’re in love if you just aren’t noticing other
members of the opposite sex.
- My boyfriend
could tell you about a million stories about how I’ve completely ignored him
because I was in the middle of a book!
What are some of
the crazy things you’ve done because you’re in the middle of a great book?

Love your post. I can't begin to mention the things I've done while reading great books. :) I was hosting Thanksgiving dinner for the family (like always) I was so wrapped up with Outlander I actually had to call everyone and change the time by a couple of hours because I forgot to put the Turkey in on time. lol
ReplyDeleteI've missed Dr.'s appointments, meeting up with my daughters etc. The Outlander series or ANY highlander books are my downfall. The house could probably be falling down around me when I'm really into a book and I wouldn't it. lol
I absolutely LOVE the picture of Gregory Peck. Love him. :)

Danielle, I LOVE the pictures you chose. I remember being so absorbed in a Virginia Henley book that I brought it inside my office and read until the clock struck the starting hour. Anyone who knows me would recognize this as really odd behavior. LOL
ReplyDeleteI was in labor--for the fourth day--and reading Judith Ivory's "Angel in a Red Dress" (yet again) My dear daughter started to get serious about making an appearance but I didn't ring for the nurse until I'd finished reading one particular scene (for probably the third time in a row). Mother and child were fine, I guess, but I know for sure I finished that book before we were discharged.
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Danielle! I've been hooked on audio books because of not having a whole lot of time to read, but when I was talking to a patron who loves them too, she said she hates to take anyone with her in the car because she has to turn off her book. I had to laugh, agreeing with her, or like parking in the garage and not being able to stop listening to the book, so have to take the disk inside to finish it up, when I'm supposed to ONLY listen to it on the drive back and forth to work! :)
ReplyDeleteHow fortunate we are that you LOVE our books! At our house when I pick up a book, Husband automatically picks up an order-out menu, because there will be no food (and I LOVE to cook), no housecleaning and no laundry done until I finish it.
ReplyDeleteAnd you will tell "nosy authors" when you are engaged...right?
According to this I'm definitely in love with books. Just the other day I told my cat "wait five minutes, I have just three more pages to finish this book, then I'll let you out" Ha,ha:)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if it is crazy but it is necessary. There are quick fix types of meals that the kids know how to put together for those occasions that I am late coming home from work....or because I am too engrossed in a book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your top ten, Danielle, and I loved looking at the photographs along the way, too.

It's so funny that Carol mentioned Outlander because when I was a teacher I was reading that or maybe the second in Gabaldon's series during silent reading time in my classroom. For once the kids were actually reading--or at least being quiet--and I got so into the book forgot about the time, and we read the whole class period instead of 20 minutes. It was a 90-minute class! LOL!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with this post. Thanks for posting, Danielle!
ReplyDeleteAwesome post, Danielle!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with my job as an author and feel so bad that my husband doesn't feel the same way about his job!
Fortunately, we both feel the same way about books. He's on vacation now and is glad it's raining...so he can do more reading!
I think I have done all of these things.
ReplyDeleteI would add one more to the list:
ReplyDeleteYou know you're in love when you spend the entire night in bed but not a moment of it sleeping ;D !
I often sacrifice a night of slumber on the altar of a great book!
Hi Everyone! Sorry for the delay in comments-I've been in training all day. I've really enjoyed reading your stories about how you've been distracted by books you've fallen in love with... I've definitely added some books to my TBRpile, which is already about a mile long :)
ReplyDeleteOMG! You had me with Gregory Peck....
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Danielle! I especially enjoyed the comment that you always finish a book. I've never read a book where I didn't find some new idea or gem of wisdom that's enriched my life.
