Naps: The Ulitmate Indulgence, by Sara Taney Humphreys

I love sleep. Probably because like most working moms, I don't get enough of it. It's the ultimate alone time. Like many of you, I'm a mom, wife, writer and employee-at-insert-job-here. Between work, kids, husband, house, laundry, dogs, bird, writing, editing...there are only so many hours in the day to get it all done. Very often, sleep is the thing that gets cut short.

Sleeping at night for a nice long eight hour stretch is fantastic. The only thing that trumps that is the Sunday afternoon nap. I never used to be able to nap. You know...before I had kids. HA! Not anymore. I used to make fun of my father for taking catnaps. Clearly, God has a sense of humor because these days I daydream of napping.

Naps. Now they are the ultimate indulgence for me. Laying on the sofa, curled up under my coziest blanket and falling asleep to a great old movie. (Dirty Dancing anyone?) Yes, that quiet nap time with no interruptions . You know the ones I mean. Questions like.... What time is dinner? Where are my socks? Did the dogs poop in the playroom? Why are frogs green? Mom are you sleeping?

I think that every Sunday from 2pm-4pm should be mandated Mommy Nap Time. Ahhhh....one can dream.

  1. Ohmigosh, Sara, I've wanted to sleep the last two mornings but with work, couldn't. And I was sick all weekend, and couldn't. But as soon as I have a day off, do you think I'll sleep in? No way. Too much to do. But if I could, that's just what I'd do...sleep!!!

  2. Sunday nap time sounds like bliss -- no "mommy" questions. Ahhhh. But I can't nap. Never have been able to. I do like slapping on an old favorite movie and zoning out on a Sunday afternoon, though!

And nice choice in movie relaxation!

  4. My grandma told me when I was a little girl that the things I sought so hard to avoid--naps, baths, vegetables, pretty clothes that stayed pretty--would someday be things I treasured. One kid later, and granny was a genius.

  5. My need for naps always hits me at the wrong time. I'll be writing along, and suddenly it's 10:30 PM and my bed is all I can think about. But do I get up and take a shower and put on my nightie and settle in for the night? Nope. I dive in fully clothed and then have to get up at midnight to do all that bedtime stuff. If I can do something else to avoid taking the plunge, I can keep going for another hour and then go to bed, but it doesn't always work out that way.

  6. I wish I could nap more. My husband can nap anywhere. He spends most of his week on a plane and can sleep the minute he closes his eyes. It takes me forever to fall asleep.

  7. @Terry I love to sleep in when I can but that darn body clock doesn't let me. *curses*

@Jo-Anne I am a huge fan of lazy movie afternoons. They are right up there with nap time.

@Grace-Isn't it amazing how right our moms and grandmas turn out to be? I find myself sounding more and more like my mom every day.

  9. @Cheryl-The bedtime nap. Love it.

@Stacie-My hubby too. If he sits down for more than five minutes...he's out. Thanks for subscribing and I hope you'll enjoy it.

  10. Ah, the Sunday afternoon nap...catchup sleep! Use-to-be the kids that had a million questions like you mentioned. Now it's the phone...there appears to be a button somewhere in my brain that gets pushed the minute I fall asleep. The button is connected to the phone and bingo...by some paranormal unexplainable occurance, the phone rings.

  11. I agree about naps being mandatory. The custom of a siesta sounds so civilized, doesn't it?

When my kids were little, my MIL gave me some great advice. "When they sleep, you sleep." Words to live by!

  12. Oh my! A nap! Yes, I'll take one! but of course I seldom do. Like you, there is just too much to do and not enough time in the day to do it all. So this is one great indulgence, I'd like to do more of!

  14. I vote for your Mommy Nap proposal. I don't even get a reliable 8 hours of sleep a night because my toddler is often up with an illness or a bad dream. I could use a nap!

  15. @Carolyn--Hmmm. Too bad there isn't a "ringer off" switch in the brain. ;)

@Mia--Your MIL and my mom are smart women. Mom told me the same thing. It was great when they were babies.

  17. @Shana--I don't think I got a full night sleep until about a year ago. My youngest are 10 years old. Good luck and may you have a full night sleep sooner than I did. LOL

  18. I need a nap right now. I think I'll take one. :-)

    My captcha is bensedin
which is funny because I've "been Sedin'" a lot recently. The hero of Rock Hard is Sed. (which releases Friday). Ha! I am amused.

    Okay, now it's nap time.

  19. I woke up this morning and wanted to go back to bed but couldn't. I went to work and REALLY wanted to crawl back in bed. Naps are truly the ultimate indulgence!

  20. @Olivia-My copy of Rock Hard arrived yesterday. I can't wait to read it! I'll be featuring it on Romance Roundup with the RT piece I'm doing.

@Amanda--I had the same exact experience this morning. *Sigh* no more sleep. Time for work.
