New beginnings-- Let's talk AMERICAN IDOL

I can't help myself -- I tune into American Idol even when I swear I won't each year. Each year I swear it's my last if it's not a better season than the one before it.

This year American Idol is bright and shiny and new. It defines NEW BEGINNING with the change of judges and new format changes we've been promised. I love Steven Tyler and I think Jennifer Lopez is a Madonna in the sense that she is the queen of creating opportunity. She knows how to use her assets. And Randy -- well Randy is Randy. He's never felt like a major player to me. I was disappointed the past two years in the show. The talent just wasn't as exciting as in past years. I'm really hoping that with the new judges we see some exciting talent as the season progresses. That will be the test for me when I decide if I want to tune in or not. Do I want to see the performances? Last year I fast forwarded to see only a few. I really hope we get some Chris Daugherty goodness this year!

So -- what do you think of Idol so far? Do you even care? And who are your favorites from the show past and present?

And since we here at the Casablanca blog are gearing up for a huge February contest with more than 10 books as a grand prize and lots of daily prizes, I thought I'd help get everyone in the mood by having a giveaway. Just post your comment for a chance to win. I'll choose one commenter to win HIGH OCTANE my March Blaze release.

In February I'll be giving away one of these:

I've also posted an excerpt for LEGEND OF MICHAEL here

So comment away and good luck! I'll draw the winner Tuesday night since this is the weekend and people tend to be away from their computer.

  1. I don't watch much TV except for a couple of crime drama shows. But there are friends of mine who faithfully watch each season of American Idol towards the end. The winners of the last couple of seasons haven't been that good. KC has been my only favorite I suppose.
And yes, count me in on the Blaze! ^.^

  3. maldivianbookreviewer -- I'm a huge tv fan but the next few months with heavy deadlines I am having to force myself to stay away. Idol can be such a fun escape when it is good. But I love Supernatural and Smallville and House and...I could go on:)

  4. I hardly ever watch anything anymore unless it's the occasional glimpse of what my husband is watching when I come out of my writing cave to get more tea. As a result, I have no Idol favorites, past or present.
I know. I'm SO out of touch...

  5. I don't have time to watch tv, unless it's to take a movie home to watch with my daughter once in a blue moon, or while I was working on bear orders, I like to have a movie to watch. Although with 4 bear orders, I ran out of movie... and slipped in an audio book to listen to. :) Great excerpt on the book, Lisa!

  6. On IDOL NIGHT my daughter cannot be reached. Not to invite her to come taste my newest fudge recipe or even for a fried chicken supper. The phones are off at her house. I don't watch it but I understand. When I begin a new book, everything stops until that book is finished. That's why Husband is such a wonderful author's husband. I trained him from day one of our marriage to be a good reader's husband. If I picked up a thick romance, he knew without a doubt, that we'd have takeout for supper. Things worked the same when I started writing. Addiction is addiction!

  7. I've watched a few clips of American Idol auditions here and there. (Stephen Tyler!!!! *gush, gush, gush*) TV does not hold my attention. I've always got a million things on my mind and know there are other things I should be doing, so I feel guilty. And it's kind of boring. The only time I really "watch" TV is when I'm doing dishes and I have a DVD in the tiny TV in my kitchen. Just finished watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the kitchen and am currently working my way through Angel. I never seem to see shows when they are actually aired.

  8. I'm not a huge fan of the American Idol audition episodes, so I typically don't tune into Idol until they're down to the Top 10. Adam Lambert is my all-time Idol favorite. His live show is absolutely fabulous.

  9. I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves this tacky show! I do NOT watch television at all - except for American Idol (and mixed martial arts once in a while). I happened to see an episode years ago and got hooked. I think it's the stories - each contestent is like a character, with a story arc and hopefully a happy ending. That's how I rationalize it, anyway.
As for the new judging panel, J Lo seems kind of flat to me, but Steven Tyler is a sweetheart.

  10. Like you, I swear every year that I won't get sucked into Idol mania. But, alas, I do. It's about the only thing I watch on TV anymore.

I've always liked Randy. I thought he was a nice foil to Simon, but now I think he's trying to take Simon's place. His new mantra seems to be "is this a joke?" which got a few scoldings from Stephen.

Stephen and Jennifer are becoming new favorites of mine. They seem like genuine people.

  11. I've enjoyed hearing what other people have to say about AI, but I just don't have time to watch. I don't have time for anything anymore, it seems. I guess I enjoy AI vicariously :-)

  12. I have watched it in the past but it is so much like a soap opera that I get tired of it and loose interest. I watched when Carrie Underwood won and thought that was cool. I caught last week espoide but was dissapointed. Even though I like the judges! I think they are over the top and annoying! I rather just listen to the music than see a brutal competion!

  13. Now that Idol dropped the age limit to 15 I think we will have some amazing top 20.
I have 2 fav's already I hope they get through. I also have 2 that have touching stories It's those that even if they dont get through they are noticed...
Chris D was the reason the rules changed I use to think he was robbed but now I think it was the best thing that happened to him.
    Have a good one ann.

  14. I never get the remote, but the men in my life do love me and let me watch NCIS on Tuesday's and my driver during racing season. ;)

    Great excerpt and quote!

  15. I hope that the new crew on Idol bring more life to the show. Maybe better talent will show up now that Simon's not there to intimidate the hopefuls. I still like Kelly Clarkson. I look at her and think the American Dream is still attainable.

Looking forward to your new release!

  16. Cheryl I am feeling a bit out of touch now too. I have just craziness between now and May and my DVR is going to get REALLY full.

Thank you on the excerpt Terry:)

Carolyn -- fudge would lure me away from a whole lot of stuff. DH just googled being a writer's husband and found some of the funniest stuff! I guess he needed a support group lol!

Olivia I didn't watch Angel and Buffy until they were and DH and I watched Buffy after Angel because we weren't ready to give up Angel.

  17. I watched a bit of the first episode and couldn't get into it. I might watch again when they go to Hollywood.

  18. I have not watched American Idol this season but think I'll DVR it so I'll have something fun to watch when there is nothing good on TV.

  19. Love American Idol!! And am really happy with how it's going this year so far. The judges seem to actually care about what's going on aruond them (past few yrs I thought the judges looked bored with it al and thy spent too much time picking on each other about things that had nothing to do with the contestants.) Annnnyhow, am hopeful this year will be better than yrs prior. Will it be enough to salvage the show? We'll see.... :)

  20. I'm not a Idol fan, but I'm going to watch the finals.

  21. I watch NCIS and Top Gear - that's about it And even with those shows I DVR and only watch during my lunch. I'm always amazed when I find authors who watch a ton of TV. Where do they find the time?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Jane -- Hollywood week is always where I get more involved too. Catherine, I really hope the new judges make it exciting as things go on. They do seemed really into the show. That matters. And Robyn -- DH and I tend to have after deadline weekend TV marathons where we watch an entire season of a show.

  23. It's like a train-wreck - I want to turn away from it but I can't! The people that they have put through because they whined and pleaded (even though they sang off key, etc) has annoyed me to the point that I don't know if I want to watch it once it becomes an actual competition

    ReplyDelete
  24. Joanne--J Lo reminds me of Paula minus the dingy. Tamara Adam has such an amazing voice. How cool to see him in person! Tracey I heard Randy and Stephen have bumps heads a bit. I expected Stephen to be arrogant because I watched his BEA interview and he seemed so into himself. He has been a pleasant surprise. He is just so freaking talented. Age hasn't impacted his voice at all like it does so many.

Colleen that first show with Kelly when she sang her final song -- tear jerker! Never forget it.

  25. So sorry, but American Idol is one
show I never could get into. Love
DWTS, but not so much into AI. Have
lots of friends who are really into
the show, but it just has not yet
happened for me! Love NCIS, cop/
    detective and CSI shows.

  26. Pat this past season was my first time to watch any of Dancing with the Stars. I'm not a huge fan but I enjoyed it more than I expected to. Watching the Situation dances was ah...an interesting Situation lol!

  29. I haven't watched American Idol this year. For some reason I have trouble bringing in the Fox Channel so I haven't been watching anything on Fox. My favorite winner from the past is Carrie Underwood, although my favorite non-winner is definitely Daughtry. I love Daughtry. I would love to read your new Blaze.

  30. I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with the new AI. Steven Tyler is hysterical. I watch it just to see what he'll say or do.

  31. I love American Idol, Lisa! The new judges are better than I hoped. :} I'm late for the giveaway, but it's wonderful of you to do a pre-launch!
