RWA for Lovers

I’m obsessed with the fact that I’m going to RWA at the end of July. OBSESSED. Just ask anyone in the PR department at Sourcebooks and they’ll tell you it’s all I can talk about. Traveling to San Francisco at the most idyllic time of year—check! Meeting some of my LOVELY authors?—yes please! Possible Fabio (or other cover model) sightings—you better believe it!

But then I sat down one evening and took a gander at the conference schedule (http://www.rwanationalconference.org/Schedule/Schedule_Overview.html) and oh my goodness—there’s so much stuff going on! Workshops for authors (including one all about breaking the rules—something I know all of you love to do!), “speed dating” with agents and publishers, spotlights on authors and publishers (Sourcebooks Casablanca will be spotlighted on Saturday, August 2nd) and so much more. I hope I can fit in as much as possible and let you all know what’s going on. I’ll be finalizing what I’ll be going to over the next few weeks, so I’m sure I’ll be updating my personal schedule all the time.

So, for those of you going—what are you excited to do or see at RWA? And for those of you who aren’t (and will hopefully join us next year)—what do you want us to find out for you? I think this will be a great experience that we can come back and share with everyone else, so we can all benefit from the workshops and meetings! Not to mention a ton of pictures…

  2. Danielle,
I'm looking forward to meeting my fabulous publicist face-to-face! Yes, really.

I'm sorry to break this to you, but there will not be any cover models. In fact there will be very few men at all except for hotel staff. And I could make a crack about this being San Francisco and all, but I'll restrain myself. ;-)

The publishers spotlights are some of my very favorite presentations. Will Sourcebooks have any of our authors signing books? I know Avon does this and several other publishers.

The Rita/Golden Heart Awards ceremony is always fabulous... fantastic clothes, funny and emotional speeches, lots of cheering and crying. I'm really looking forward to that, esp. coz I have friends who are finalists in both contests. Here's hoping that next year we see Sourcebook Casablanca authors as Rita Nominees!

The literacy signing the first night is also amazing. ALL those authors and TONS of people (it is open to the public) milling around, buying books, talking books, living books! And proceeds go for a great cause.

Yup, I'm really looking forward to everything, plus San Francisco is a beautiful city with so much to see and do. If you've never been there before you will LOVE it! Though expect it to be chilly, pack a jacket and your walking shoes.

  3. No cover models? Not even some cover model wannabes? I'm crushed, positively crushed! I mean, no one does this just to meet other women, do they? 'Cmon, REALLY?

  4. Danielle~

I'm so glad you're excited to go. Get lots of sleep before you leave because when I'm at nationals I'm up by six and don't get to bed until two most nights. When I get home, I sleep for a two days straight.

I've yet to see the cover models--I think they hang out at RT--but there is one very fine British editor who has a shaved head, a wicked sense of humor, and can pull off wearing black and white wing-tip shoes with an Al Capone dark gray pinstripe suit. Yum.

I can't wait to see everyone there!

    Robin :)

  5. For me it's catching up with my friends so we can talk face to face. My agent's giving a workshop, so I'll sit in there and the Spotlight on Sourcebooks. Plus the Literacy Signing is always fun. So many people there!

There's a few workshops I don't intend to miss and social engagements, but I tend to network more than anything anymore.

And I can't wait to meet you face to face, Danielle!

  7. Marie-- I'm keeping that as a promise ;)

Aunty Cindy--Thanks for all the infomrmation! I'm not sure yet what we're doing as far as author signings...but as soon as I do, I will definitley let everyone know! and SF is one of my favorite cities in the US; I'm glad to have such a great reason to return.

Cheryl--I'm with you on that one...maybe one will show up by surprise!

Robin-- I am ready for the long days! And I'm packing all of my flat shoes because I'm sure we'll be on our feet :) I can't wait to meet you too!!

Linda-- Networking is always a great idea. We're goign to have a blast!!

  9. Hey Danielle,
I'm looking forward to meeting you! and Deb. My agent will be there, and usually we get together at some point too. I'm looking forward to signing No Regrets at the literacy - hope to be wearing my Regency gown for that, but I gotta get busy on the sewing.
I'm looking forward to talking to my on line writer friends and hopefully meeting some new folks and telling them all about my next book!
I am giving a workshop with my American Title 2 sisters, how to promote before you have a book.
I will also be attending the Beaumonde conference the day before.

Yep, can't wait. See you there,
    Michele

  10. I can't go to RWA, but I do have some online friends who are going to be taking a stuffed rabbit in my place...LOL...so for those going, look for it.

I was able to attend the RWA booksigning in ATL in 2006 and all I can say is WOW...as an avid reader it was paradise. Even if I did stand there looking like a deer caught in the headlights. LOL

  11. Danielle,
I'm going for the first time with my writer gal pals from my OK RWA chapter instead of hubby (previous 4 times) so it will be like a huge girls' weekend. Thursday night my chapter hosts the fab National Readers Choice Award ceremony, one evening I'll catch up with my Chick Lit Writers of the World fellow chickadees and get to see my agent and meet you and Deb. Can't wait!!!!

  12. At the Dallas National Conference one year, they supposedly had a cowboy broncos meeting going on and because there were so many women there, they asked us what we were doing. Romance authors, and Mary Kaye, but we invited them to come to our stuff and talk! :) I think the notion was scary to them! :)

    Have a super time, Danielle!
