Beautiful Crazy Excerpt

I'm working from Dallas this week, and I have limited time so I thought I'd share a short excerpt from Beautiful Crazy (out November 1), the first book in the debut series, Rock ’n’ Ink! Also, if you follow me on Twitter , Facebook , or sign up for my newsletter on my website , I'll be giving away an ARC at the end of the month. Enjoy! She's a rocker with attitude and ink... He's a sexy suit who gets what he wants. Kevan Landry is trying to keep her life on track and her brother in rehab. If her fledgling marketing firm can sign the hot new band, Manix Curse, it will make a world of difference. Mason Dillon heads the most successful music PR firm in Portland. He's desperate to breathe new life into the company by signing Manix Curse. The last thing either one needs is a one-night stand with a smoldering stranger... The stakes are high when a battle for the band-in the bedroom and the boardroom-becomes a battle of the heart. But if these two can set...

When I Don't Have Time To Read, I Listen

When I Don't Have Time To Read, I Listen One of the side-effects of adding writing into my life has been a severe shortage of time. My house is now dusty, my laundry is always backed up, and homemade meals are a thing of the past. Another place I’ve felt the time pinch is in my reading time. I used to spend hours reading. I used to read for an hour before bed every night. All that is gone. And I miss books. I miss stories. So I started listening to books. It took me a little while to re-calibrate to listening instead of reading, but it’s a way for me to keep books in my busy busy busy life.   I listen to books while I’m getting ready for work in the morning. I plug my iPhone into a speaker and listen while I shower and get ready for the day. I plug my phone into my car and listen for the 7 minutes it takes me to get to work. And when I get home, I listen while I’m doing housework or dishes or laundry or cooking. One thing I’ve learned about audio books… The narr...

I, Katie Ruggle, Am Not a Zombie (Now Stand Still So I Can Steal Your Brains)

I’m kidding. Honestly, I’m not going to steal your brains—or your personality. Sometimes, when I share with new acquaintances that I’m an author, they flinch away, saying, “Don’t put me in one of your books!” Others ask, “Where do you get your ideas from?” while giving me suspicious looks, as if I’m in the process of mentally robbing them of their identities. For me, it doesn’t really work that way. There are tiny bits of a whole army of real-life people in each character, but I don’t decide, “Okay, Daisy from In Safe Hands is one-third my Aunt Betty, one-quarter the guy who works at the gas station, and five-twelfths my third-grade teacher.” My heroes and heroines jump into my head fully formed. Their quirks and foibles are not really conscious decisions on my part; the characters just are how they are.  Daisy is Daisy, and Chris is Chris. Because of that, they constantly surprise (and frustrate) me. When I write, the characters are driving the bus. Sometimes...

Free Anthology: TALES OF THE VALKYRIES (by Asa Maria Bradley)

I've just finished one of the most fun writing projects I've ever worked on: six writers collaborated on an anthology of short stories. We are all women who write about Vikings--some of us historical, some of us paranormal--so it makes sense to call our collection TALES OF THE VALKYRIES. Writing can be a very solitary exercise and working with Gina Conkle , Lisa Hendrix , Anna Markland , Emma Prince , and Harper St. George on this project refueled my creativity. Since we finished the anthology, I've written more words per day than I normally do. The anthology is currently free at Barnes & Noble and Kobo . We're still waiting for Amazon to price match, but they say they will do so shortly. Meanwhile, you can claim your Kindle version through our instaFreebie campaign. And then mark your calendar for our super fun Facebook party on Thursday September 15 at 5:30 - 9:10 PM (EDT) . You'll be able to win great giveaways and a grand prize of Amazon gift car...

New Release: Discovery of Desire by Susanne Lord

The second in Susanne Lord’s critically acclaimed London Explorers series, Discovery of Desire , is out now! To celebrate, we've pulled an excerpt from the book to share. *** Author’s Note: Seth has disembarked from the steamship, onto the crowded, bustling port of Bombay. The other passengers, including the four dozen lady passengers who had sailed to wed East India Company men, are rushed by the bachelors and huddled together in the chaos… “Ladies?” A woman’s voice. Sweet and low and nearly swallowed in the fray. Maybe it was because his explorer’s senses were honed to seek the rare, the anomalies in nature, but Seth trailed that voice to a venture girl twenty feet away. She wore a trim white jacket and green skirt with starry, white flowers all over it. Her sun helmet concealed all but a bit of brown hair. “Ladies, as no one has told us yet what to do, if you are to be met by someone, would you move to this end?” She gestured and the ladies shuffled to...

My Wild Irish Dragon is here!

There are certain milestones a writer never forgets. "The call." That first contract. The first time you hold your beautiful book in your hands... Yeah, it never gets old. Each book is special in its own way. Sometimes a fabulous review will never leave you. One of the best feelings is when your editor says, "You nailed it!" Yup. That happened with this book. Book 1 got fabulous reviews too, but "you nailed it" from a Sourcebooks editor... Well, that memory will be treasured forever.  But something else--something very special--happened because of this series. My trip to Ireland. Have you ever pictured a place in your mind--if you're a writer, maybe you've even described it in a book, never having been there. And then you go, and--gasp--there it is! Yes. That happened. I described a castle on the western cliffs of Ireland. In book one, only a caretakers cottage and the broken shell of the ancient structure remained. But the caves......

New Release: Love's Sweet Revenge by Rosanne Bittner

Jake and Miranda Harkner’s love helped shape a nation and, over the years, they’ve endured all of the dangers a wild and brutal West could throw at them. Now they are sitting down with us to discuss how they’ve made their happy ever after last a lifetime. Author’s Note: This interview would have taken place in 1896 at Jake’s ranch (the J&L) in Colorado. The interviewer would have taken note that Randy is a tiny, beautiful blond with gray/green eyes who doesn’t look her age at all. Randy is a stark contrast to her husband Jake – who stands six feet four inches. He’s broad and well-muscled, deeply tanned, with thick, dark hair that has tiny streaks of white in it. His dark eyes capture a person right down to their toes. MIRANDA: Oh, my, there are so many positive aspects to our relationship that has kept it going these past thirty years … and I must say that in spite of all of them it’s been a challenge. JAKE: (Lighting a cigarette) Challenge is probably the biggest u...
