The Best Reading Experience You’ve Ever Had

What is your favorite reading memory?

Mine is rather recent:  Last summer, we went on a family vacation to Northern California.  After a week of big trees and winding, nausea –inducing mountain passes, we came to the Pacific coast.  Being a Southern, east coast girl, I was enthralled with the great cliffs rising above the ocean. In fact, our little beach rental was perched on one of those majestic overhangs.  In the den was this fabulous chair by the sliding glass door.  My husband took the kids down to the beach one afternoon.  I had nothing to do but sit in the chair, listen to the roar of the sea, and read a fabulous Stephen King novel that was left in the house.

Here is a picture of the chair!

Now it’s your turn. What is your favorite reading memory?

Susanna Ives is the author of the funny Victorian romances Wicked Little Secrets and the upcoming Wicked, My Love.

  1. When mom retired her tattered old channel-back armchair, I snagged it along with a hassock held together with duct tape. When I was a teenager, I had them in my room behind my dresser in a nook surrounded by book cases and shelves. I still have the chair and hassock (and books), but it's not the same reading hideaway.

    1. Ohh, a secret reading nook! A place to escape. How perfect for a teenager. I love this. Thank you for sharing. I'm a collector of old, sentimental furniture as well. Two of my stories were written in my great grandmother's rocking chair. May you have a wonderful holiday season. And thanks again for the lovely comment.

  2. So many to remember - as a child enjoyed devouring Nancy Drew books. My mom had to stop me from finishing an entire book on one day, because well, then it would be done. LOL. Over the years these books have stood out in my mind as really enjoyable:

    Three Wishes - Barbara Delinsky
    Mackenzie's Mountain - Linda Howard
Sarah's Child - Linda Howard - what a gutwrenching ending
The Red Diary - Toni Blake
SEP - Nobody's Baby But Mine and Kiss An Angel

I could go on and on - And have always loved Carolyn's Cowboy books, particularly that "Bar" series.

    1. Carolyn Brown is wonderful! She writes great stories and has a fabulous sense of humor. I remember all those Nancy Drews with the yellow covers lined up on the shelf. I was more of a Trixie Belden girl. You really could devour those books in a day, but then read it again the next Thank you so much for the wonderful comment. May you have a lovely holiday!

  3. So many, but since you mentioned Stephen King I was reminded of a Christmas break when I was in high school. I spent about 3 days in my room reading The Stand. I was completely absorbed.

    1. You read The Stand in three days! Isn't that book like a million pages or something. Wow. I'm impressed.

  4. Thank you to Anonymous for that shout out! Hugs to you wherever you are! A short story here: When I was about fourteen I had the privilege of being able to check out books at the local college library and I found The Concubine. I had to look up the word to even know what it was but hey when I found out, there was no holding me back. I had to read that book however being afraid Mama would catch me with it, I read it in the cellar that summer which was far cooler than the house! Then because I loved the story so much, I read it again!

    1. Haha! But I bet The Concubine heated up that cellar. Great story! Did the book influence your romance writing career?

  5. Wow, so many great memories, and so many great places I have immersed myself in a book (I especially like to enjoy a book at an outdoor jazz concert...my hubby is always afraid I am going to offend the musicians but I think it is such a wonderful combination...the music, fresh air and a good book). I think my best memory is the first time I went into a used bookstore as a child...it was called "Acres of Books" and I was in heaven!

    1. Reading at an outdoor jazz concert sounds wonderful. I love, love, love jazz. Acres of Books! What a fabulous name! My mom and I would load up at used bookstores back in the day. Thank you for the comment. I hope you enjoy some great holiday jazz and books.
