From Mia Marlowe ....
I've always been a firm believer in setting goals. I like to write them down and stick a date on them. That way it's measurable. I know when I've arrived.
Last week I was in South Dakota visiting my sister and her family and got a chance to see the Crazy Horse monument. This thing is massive. No, that's not it in the foreground of the picture.
A wife may be courted, too…
Many would count Katherine Douglas fortunate indeed. Laird William Douglas is broad-shouldered, gentle-handed, everything a lass could dream.
After four years of marriage, Katherine still knows little of what goes on in his heart. And she has yet to bear him an heir. The distance between them is too great—and so she flees over the snowy highlands to Glengarry Castle, home of her childhood, to set her husband free.
But William won’t let his wife slip away without a fight. Before long, he’s at her father’s threshold himself, witness to the rumbles of discontent in Glengarry, the bright joy of Yuletide at a family hearth, and the hidden needs of his own beloved…

The actual monument is a mile away, still being carved into the mountain in the distance. To give you an idea of the scale, that hole in the rock face is large enough that a 10 story building will fit snugly inside it. All four faces on Mt. Rushmore would fit inside Crazy Horse's head. Oh, and the face of the warrior is all that is finished so far. It was unveiled in 1998.
The artist, Korczak Ziolkowski, who began the work in 1948 has died but several of his children are continuing to blast away at the rock. Even though I'm a fan of setting goals, I've never considered one that couldn't be accomplished in my lifetime. Guess I've never dreamed quite that big.
Perhaps I should.
Then there are other, much shorter term goals, some of them quite silly. I managed to tick off one of those last week too. My sister offered me some Kopi Luwak coffee and I did drink. If you've seen the movie, THE BUCKET LIST, you know the story behind this brew.
If you don't think about the journey the beans took to get to your cup, it really wasn't bad at all.
So how about you? Do you have a Bucket List? A goal you're working on? Share it with us and I'll enter you in the drawing for an ARC of my upcoming ONCE UPON A PLAID.

I have 2 on for stuff I want to do and am aiming to fulfill, one is a fantasy bucket list of things that I would love to do but they will probably never happen (not enough money, not enough hot men, etc...)
ReplyDeleteI hear that. I still have a world cruise on my fantasy list.
DeleteNo major goals. I'm more a survive one day at a time person. I can't imagine who thought of making coffee that way roflmao!
ReplyDeletecatslady5@aol.com
LOL! Yeah, what genius first thought, "Hey! Why don't I pick the undigested coffee beans out of civet cat feces and see how it tastes?"
DeleteAs usual, I masked the coffee taste with copious amounts of creamer!
I have a daily to do list that never gets done of course, and a someday somehow list that's more about traveling than anything else
ReplyDeleteJoannaM
Travel is my guilty pleasure too, Joanna. My list of "wanna visits" is a long one.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see Europe and Scotland...and maybe the bottom of my TBR boxes, lol Thanks for the giveaway and best wishes with your release!
ReplyDeleteLOL for the bottom of the TBR pile. I still remember seeing Chris Keeslar's famous slush pile back when I visited the Dorchester offices. It was waist high and ringed his entire office! He's a terrific editor who wanted to give everyone a fair reading.
DeleteDon't have a list

One of my sisters doesn't either. She says no goals means no disappointments. I'll take the lows since they also come with highs.
DeleteI would love to be able to renovate my house!
ReplyDeleteHaving just finished a renovation, I can support that goal! I love the changes we made and feel like our house is just right for us now. Maybe you can take it in stages...
DeleteMy bucket list includes a long trip to Scotland, a visit to the pyramids of Egypt, go out West and see the desert and Grand Canyon and go tour Washington, DC. I am sure there are more, but those are top on the list.
ReplyDeleteThe pyramids would be fascinating, if that part of the world would settle down a bit. I confess to a little trepidation about traveling there right now.
DeleteI don't have a list, but my goal is a trip to New Zealand.

My niece & her husband have been to NZ 4 times and can't wait to go again. It must be gorgeous.
DeleteI keep a variety of lists...daily to do, short term goals, long term goals, a travel bucket list. I want to travel to all 50 States and have just a few to go!
ReplyDeleteMe too Nise! I only have Louisiana, Mississippi & Alabama to go. Good luck!
DeleteCurrently it's to hit the gym more frequently. I'd been slacking.
ReplyDeleteI need to do that too.
