One Night with A Rake Launch Party!

from Mia Marlowe...

Break out the bubbly! Toot the noisemakers! One Night with a Rake has landed in a bookstore near you. I'm excited about this story for so many reasons, but mostly because I love the characters.

My hero Nate is as conflicted and tortured as any romance reader could wish. The heroine Georgette is full of good intentions that constantly get her into trouble. And they're surrounded by fun secondary characters, like Reuben Darling, the handsome, but not terribly "book smart" footman who's suffering from an unrequited love for Mercy, Georgette's lady's maid. (Mercy is a reformed whore who thinks being a respectable woman is ever so much more trouble than being a light-skirt!)

While I love One Night with a Rake now, it's true that we writers never love our stories quite so much as when they are finished. It's easy to love a gorgeous cover and ringing prose that took a number of sharp eyes to shine up.

It's the birthing process of a book that's work. The knitting together of all the plot's bones and fleshing out the characters till they breathe on their own. It's pounding out the word count each day and pressing forward into the mist, hoping you haven't lost the thread of the narrative somewhere along the way.

That's why sometimes writers need to stop and refill their creative cup. And that's what I just finished doing. I haven't been in my usual writing chair with a little dog snugged by my hip. For the past few days, I've been on a cruise ship, sailing around the British Isles with the love of my life, my DH. We celebrated my 4th year of being cancer free and our anniversary by running away together.

Of course, I also did research for future stories... Just don't tell my DH. He thinks the trip was all about him!

  2. When my well runs dry I like to run a huge bubble bath and sink into it with a good book to read. I always feel better afterwards. It seems like that just melts all the stress away for me.

  5. Thanks, CH. I'm doing really well health-wise now. It seems the sea air agrees with me!

  6. For a quick recharge I like to shut myself away in my room with a good book and maybe a nap. For a longer recharge I try and plan a trip that takes me away from my boys for a few days.

  7. April, I'm envious. I don't have a tub in our condo. Having a nice hot soak sounds like heaven!

  8. Agreed, A Neely! There's nothing like disappearing into a fictive dream to recharge.

  9. Girls Day Out sounds like fun, Crystal, so long as it's weighted heavily in the spa treatments direction. If you're talking "retail therapy" you've lost me. I'm the Anti-Shopper. ;-)

  10. Sarah--The DH and I studiously planned on doing nothing for a couple of days on our cruise. A nap was definitely part of the day!

  11. Cruising the British Isles sounds fantastic! When my well runs dry, I take a shower with expensive soap. Seems like I'm doing that more and more lately. Couldn't afford that many cruises. ;)
Congrats on the new release and best wishes for your continued good health!

  12. Congratulations on the book release and also, congratz on the good health! I am super jealous of your cruise through the British Isles. I need some sun right now. Minnesota is so dreary, cold & rainy.

  13. Congratulations to my critique partner from one of your biggest fans.

Hey, everyone! As usual, Mia is being too modest. This book is AWESWOME! I loved the spirited heroine, unafraid to help the downtrodden no matter how much it horrified her family. And the hero--what a wonderful tortured man!

I really love critiquing for Mia. Mostly I clap and say, "Bravo!" Occasionally, I might have a crumb of advice--or crummy advice. LOL But she knows which is which.

Don't be jealous that I got to read it first. Just go get it and read it now!

  14. Happy Release Day! To recharge I like to destress and curl up with a good book and the only interruptions should be the sounds of kitty snores and purrs :-)

  15. Happy Release Day! Sounds like a fun cruise with a lot to celebrate.

  17. Congratulations on the new release. To recharge, I like to relax and read a good book.

  18. Glad you beat cancer. Your vacation sounds like a great way to relax & celebrate! I don't have an opportunity for vacation at this point, but I love to go to the boardwalk for an hour & walk with my husband or ipod if he isn't available! And, of course, I love to get lost in a romance novel!

  21. Cheryl, we can't afford that many cruises either. It amazed me how many of our fellow passengers would take 3 or 4 trips a year. The DH and I have to save up for ours.

  22. JPeezy, we didn't get much sun on our cruise. In fact, it only inched out of the 50's on one day of our trip, but we bundled ourselves up and carried our umbrellas and had a good time no matter the weather!

  23. Ashlyn, you're such a sweetie. Thanks, as always, for your support!

  24. VenusBookLover, I don't have a cat anymore. We have two dogs... who snore. Does that count for purring?

  25. Victoria, Thanks on both counts. We are very grateful for all our blessings--good health and love being two of the best!

  26. Shana, it's actually more like 4 1/2 years cancer free. In November of this year, it'll be 5 years, the magic number when the doc uses the word "cure."

    ReplyDelete
  27. Kim, Sounds like a good plan to me!

  28. Sharlene, you bring up a good point! A mini-vacation can be a great escape. I like to walk our dogs along the Mystic River and watch the swans. It never fails to sooth me.

  29. BN--Good idea. Mack the WonderDog & Prince Harry heartily approve.

  30. Catslady--Congrats on 44 years with your hubby!

  31. Congratulations on your new release, Mia, and on your continued good health! Having finished a big project recently, I've been decompressing with comfort reads and the occasional bout of cooking. Last week, I tackled an apricot pie--more tart than sweet, but still very good.

  32. I will retreat with a book and be incommunicado for a couple of hours. Usually that is enough to let me recharge and face whatever needs to be done. Good luck with the launch and thank you for the giveaway.
