So here I sit with a couple of my favoritest books. In this photo I spot science fiction, thrillers, romance, Alice in Wonderland, and Winnie the Pooh all mixed into a bunch along with classics and The Phantom Toll Booth because everybody has to have read that one. (You haven't?! Go forth now. Fetch. Read aloud to kid, spouse, yourself. Repeat often.) Over my other shoulder lies much more romance, research, and travel.
ML with books and a parrot |
And guess what, those are my favorite books. Sure Ayn Rand, Tolkien, and several Nora's and Wiggs' somehow end up returning to my nightstand every few years. But the books that have changed me, have changed who I am and how I think, are my own. They're the ones that I've had to search deep and hard to make more real, more true. If I make one of my magical or post-apocalyptic worlds one bit less real than a contemporary military romantic suspense, the readers will know. Worse, I will know.
So which of my books is my favoritest?
That's easy. The most recent one. Always. I'm always most in love with my latest set of characters that I spent who knows how many hundred hours nurturing and bringing their story to the page. I'm always most touched by the journey they've just traveled. In good storytelling we look at that moment where the characters manage to step beyond ourselves and become magnificent. And we get to go along for the ride. That's my favoritest part, I think.
So, (my current) most favoritest book ever? I Own the Dawn, book 2 of "The Night Stalkers" series. (Though I'm working on book 3 [out in 2/2012] right now and that's coming up quickly in the running.)

Congrats on the release of I OWN THE DAWN...it sounds like a must read!
ReplyDeleteI liked the glimpse of your office library...mine has an eclectic collection of books too...including some of my dad's favorites as well as heirloom books passed down from my great-grandfather. It's like being surrounded by my family and filled with love. :)
I agree with you. My favorite book is always my most recent book, which is usually the one I'm working on.
ReplyDeleteAmelia
I love being surrounded by books and I am lol. One of my favorite books is Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel but my list could go on and on.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your release!
I am exactly the same way. I like whatever book I'm working on--actually, it's whatever book I've just finished :-)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite books that aren't mine include: Atlast Shrugged, Nora's "Born in" series, Dragonsinger by McCaffrey, and Martin Gardner's The Annotated Alice where he unravels all of Lewis Carroll's inside jokes. I could happily pick any of these books back up right after finishing them.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your new release! I was hoping to meet you at RWA...maybe next year. My favorite book is ALWAYS the one I'm working on right now, too!
ReplyDeleteI know. I was bummed that I couldn't hit national this year, but I simply couldn't justify either the time or the money. I'm hoping for next year myself. :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the book!
